Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, global supply chains have undergone rapid change. Climate change, pandemics, geopolitical instability, and resource scarcity have exposed enterprises to unprecedented vulnerabilities, underscoring the need to build supply chains that are not only efficient but also resilient. At the same time, sustainability has moved to the forefront of strategic agendas, demanding the integration of ecological and social considerations alongside efficiency and competitiveness.

One of the most pressing arenas in which these dynamics converge is the transition toward the use of renewable energy. The global shift toward decarbonization, electrification, and circular resource use has created new supply chain challenges—from securing critical raw materials to ensuring the end-of-life recovery and recycling of renewable technologies. Supply chains must, therefore, be designed not only to support renewable energy adoption but also to withstand balance trade-offs across sustainability dimensions, as well as remain resilient in a rapidly evolving global energy landscape.

Against this backdrop, this Special Issue, entitled “Systems Perspectives on Sustainable Supply Chains: Lessons from Renewable Energy Transitions,” will highlight the systemic interdependencies between renewable energy transitions and supply chain sustainability. While renewable energy supply chains are a focal point, we also welcome contributions from other sectors that can offer transferable insights on resilience and sustainable systems design.

We invite theoretical, methodological, and applied contributions that examine how sustainable supply chains can be designed, managed, and governed in ways that foster resilience and address renewable energy transitions; highlight trade-offs across economic, environmental, and social dimensions; and demonstrate the practical relevance of systems-based approaches.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Systems is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
