Digital and Intelligent Technologies for Analytics and Optimization in Industrial Systems Engineering
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Modern industrial systems are inherently complex, characterized by high interdependence, uncertainty, and dynamic interactions across physical, digital, and human layers. The convergence of digital technologies (IIoT, CPS, Digital Twins) and intelligent technologies (AI, ML, autonomous systems) exemplifies the next frontier of systems thinking and industrial systems engineering. These technologies not only generate and connect vast streams of data but also enable system-level analytics, optimization, and decision-making to address challenges in performance, resilience, and sustainability.
The rapid evolution of digital and intelligent technologies is transforming industrial systems into adaptive, smart, and data-driven environments. This transformation has enabled such systems to achieve greater efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability through the seamless integration of advanced analytics and optimization methods. Technologies such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Cyber–Physical Systems (CPSs), and Digital Twins (DT) enable real-time data collection, monitoring, and control, laying the foundation for predictive and prescriptive analytics. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms equip decision-makers with powerful tools for optimization, intelligent adaptation, and autonomous operations.
This Special Issue of Systems, titled “Digital and Intelligent Technologies for Analytics and Optimization in Industrial Systems Engineering”, aligns closely with Systems’ mission to advance knowledge on the design, analysis, and management of complex systems. By emphasizing analytics and optimization in industrial systems engineering, this issue contributes to the journal’s focus on systemic approaches to complexity, adaptation, and integration. It seeks to advance the frontier of knowledge in analytics and optimization of industrial systems through digital and intelligent technologies. We invite submissions that introduce new methodologies, frameworks, and applications aimed at enhancing the performance, resilience, and sustainability of modern industrial systems. Topics of interest include—but are not limited to—smart manufacturing, IIoT, AI in systems engineering, operations analytics, data-driven industrial systems, CPSs, DT, and autonomous and self-adaptive systems. By bringing together state-of-the-art contributions from academia and industry, this Special Issue is dedicated to advancing our understanding of how analytics and optimization can be effectively empowered by digital and intelligent technologies to shape the future of industrial systems. More specifically, it will illustrate how the hybridization of digital and intelligent technologies with advanced analytics is reshaping industrial systems into more adaptive, integrated, and sustainable systems-of-systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Systems is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
