Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The metaverse is defined as a network of 3D virtual world platforms and is often described as the next iteration of the Internet as a single and universal virtual world. The metaverse's key focus is social connections, creating immersive 3D social interaction. Recently, global companies such as Meta and Microsoft have invested significantly in their platforms' conceptual design and development. There is also interest from consumer product companies such as Nikeland by Nike Inc. However, public perception is mixed and unclear. The perceived use of the platform has been overly influenced by excessive promotion of the development of various related technologies.

This Special Issue aims to explore what the concept of the Metaverse platform would mean for our societies. What practical activities could users and communities do on the platform? How could the platform transform our ways of social communication? What are the potential benefits and drawbacks to our societies?

We seek contributions in conceptual papers, reviews or articles broadly relevant to the Special Issue topic. The work includes technical development, conceptual design framework and sociology considerations.
