Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sex work research is a complex, politicised field of study that regularly examines issues related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in terms of empirical and methodological design, funding and institutional support, publishing opportunities, and advocating for socio-legal change. Despite the prevalence of structural violence, race, gender, and occupational stigma within the sex work canon, specific dialogues about EDI have been slow to enter this research landscape. Is it because these scholars are already engaged with such issues, or are they bypassing this paradigm for other reasons? The widespread adoption of equity, diversity, and inclusion policies and practices in educational, health, workplace, and social settings has been received as evidence of increasing commitment to structural change and institutional scrambling in response to a world unhinged. Where do critically oriented qualitative and applied sex work researchers stand?
This Special Issue offers an opportunity to reflect on the state of sex work research against the backdrop of social justice and the discourse and/or praxis of equity, diversity, and inclusion. This cross-and inter disciplinary collection welcomes diverse theoretical, methodological, and activist-oriented contributions that explore and problematize how sex work research is being taken up in in a world where EDI is seemingly “everywhere.” We seek original submissions from diverse geographical and cultural locations, and are especially interested in scholarly and application-oriented analyses that include considerations of how art and social media figure within current sex work research.
