Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, there has been a significant focus on the development of renewable and environmentally friendly electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies due to the escalating global energy demands. One promising method to produce hydrogen as a clean fuel is through water splitting, which integrates various renewable energy sources, offers high specific energy, is eco-friendly, and fulfills the global energy demand. The present low-temperature water electrolysis techniques are primarily classified into alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis, and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis. The efficiency and durability of these water electrolysis technologies, as well as their capital and operational costs for industrial applications, are heavily influenced by catalysts and electrode fabrication. Key factors such as morphology, conductivity, and surface chemistry properties have been identified as significant determinants of the overall water splitting reactions.
This open-access Special Issue aims to compile original research, reviews, research prospects, and comprehensive state-of-the-art articles on the latest advancements in water electrolysis technologies. The issue will focus on novel synthetic approaches, innovative electrode materials, and unique device fabrication techniques for supercapacitor applications. The primary objective of this Special Issue is to present the most recent cutting-edge innovations in water electrolysis technologies. Submissions may cover themes including, but not limited to:
- Bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting;
- Device or system design for water splitting;
- Composite anion exchange membranes for water electrolyzer;
- Anion exchange membrane for fuel cells and water electrolysis.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Hydrogen is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
