Imagining a Decolonial Future through Indigenous Activism

Dear Colleagues,

In his 2019 book, Our Past is the Future, Nick Estes draws attention to the recovery of Indigenous practices of resistance capable of making “a crack in history.” The journal Humanities, an open-access online publication, is calling for papers whose topics explore these past and future “cracks in history” over the long arc of settler colonial presence in North America. We especially invite authors who think critically about these movements, using Native American and Indigenous studies methodologies to unpack their significance. In this sense, we are not seeking papers on armed or militant resistance, but rather on social movements, writings, individual actions, artistic innovations, the formation of collaborative networks, or other cultural coalitions within Indigenous communities that have worked, or are working, to bring about improved conditions for change. These movements might pertain to social conditions, sovereignty, environmental justice, MMIW, Land Back, Standing Rock, Indian boarding school histories and repatriation, etc.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Humanities is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
