Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As one of the most pressing issues societies currently face, migration has been widely researched across a range of disciplines. While much of the linguistically oriented scholarship has focused on the portrayal of migrants in public discourse, the verbalisation of the migrant experience itself is an area that warrants further study.

This special issue attends to the topic of language and migration with particular emphasis on metaphor. If metaphor allows us to apprehend and discuss experiences that are difficult to grasp, as Conceptual Metaphor Theory and other theories of metaphor maintain, what are some of the prevalent points of comparison that enable this in the case of migration? How does the body figure in metaphorical construals of migration, given the physical aspects of the experience? What kinds of verbal manifestations of displacement can be found in recent discourse? In what ways do fictive depictions of migration rely on metaphor?

We welcome individual and collaborative contributions that address these questions from any relevant theoretical and methodological angle. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • metaphor in migrant narratives
  • literary and other artistic forms of expression zooming in on migration
  • embodied metaphors and migrant experience
  • the challenges and ethical dimensions of enacting vicarious experiences involving migration
  • metaphor and portrayals of migration in educational contexts
  • metaphor and differences between depictions of migrant experiences, including post-migrant perspectives.
