MDPI Open Science Insights: Scientific Publishing Exchange with University of Southampton Malaysia, 24 October 2025


MDPI is pleased to announce an Academic Publishing Workshop in collaboration with University of Southampton Malaysia. This session is designed to equip researchers and scholars with current knowledge on publishing trends and the evolving landscape of scholarly communication.

This in-person workshop is part of MDPI’s ongoing commitment to support early-career researchers in navigating the academic publishing landscape with confidence.

We look forward to a meaningful exchange of ideas and supporting students in their publishing journey!

This session provides an introduction to MDPI and the Open Access publishing model, highlights journals in biological sciences and biomedicine, and offers a concise overview of MDPI's editorial process, including peer review and ethical practices.

Web of Science – Publication Trends and Hot Topics Identification
This segment will explore practical methods for utilizing the Web of Science database to identify emerging research areas, gauge publication momentum, and strategically position your research for maximum impact.

Artificial Intelligence in the Scientific Publishing Industry: New Challenges
A discussion on the integration of Artificial Intelligence tools and technologies within the scholarly publishing workflow, examining the opportunities they present alongside the new ethical and practical challenges they introduce for authors, reviewers, and publishers.

MDPI speakers:

Dr. Nicholas Cho Rui Wen graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a PhD from the School of Biological Sciences, studying the Gentianaceae species using bioinformatics tools such as statistical modeling and R and Linux, to apply the results to conservation efforts. He joined MDPI in March 2023 as an Assistant Editor, becoming Section Managing Editor in January 2024 and Journal Relations Specialist in August 2024, and part of this work involves engaging with scholars and researchers to work with MDPI, and conducting outreach to guide young budding researchers.
Ms. Stefania Hetrea joined MDPI in September 2020. She earned her bachelor’s degree in industrial biotechnology and her master’s degree in molecular biotechnology, both from Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Since joining MDPI, she has held several roles, including Assistant Editor, Group Leader, and Section Managing Editor. She currently serves as a Journal Relations Specialist, representing five MDPI journals within the scientific community.
