Plant growth regulators are organic compounds, either naturally produced within plants or synthetically manufactured, that influence physiological processes at very low concentrations. They play a crucial role in regulating plant growth, development, flowering, fruiting, ripening, and responses to environmental stress. In modern agriculture, synthetic plant growth regulators are widely used to improve crop productivity, enhance fruit quality, regulate flowering, prevent premature fruit drop, and facilitate harvesting.
Alongside plant growth regulators, agrochemicals constitute a broad category of chemical products used in agriculture to improve crop yield and protect plants from pests, diseases, and weeds, including fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and rodenticides.
However, the excessive or improper application of agrochemicals can lead to environmental pollution, soil degradation, water contamination, and adverse effects on human and animal health, which is why sustainable agricultural practices stress the careful use of agrochemicals, integrated pest management, and the development of eco-friendly substitutes, such as biofertilizers and biopesticides. Thus, plant growth regulators and agrochemicals are important tools in modern agriculture that continue to contribute to efficient crop production while underscoring the need for environmental stewardship and responsible management.
