Software, Volume 4, Issue 3
September 2025 - 8 articles
Cover Story: This article introduces and formalizes intersectional software engineering (ISE) as a distinct and emerging field within software engineering. ISE focuses on understanding and addressing power dynamics, inequalities, and biases that arise due to intersecting social identities such as gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. Using the ABC Framework (Actors, Behavior, Context), the authors analyze 140 studies to identify four key areas: people, processes, products, and policies. ISE promotes inclusive design, equity, and diversity via tools like GenderMag and datasets for reproducible research. This paper calls for its integration into curricula and formal recognition to improve industry practices and education. View this paper
