Hearts—A New International Open Access Journal for Cardiology, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery

1. Introduction

As an international and multidisciplinary peer-reviewed open access journal for all areas of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, Hearts has now been founded to publish original research, reviews, position papers and guideline documents, letters, ‘how to do’ reports, and rapid communications.

We at Hearts aim to reach a wide multidisciplinary community of practicing clinicians and researchers, including cardiologists, cardiac and vascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, electrophysiologists, clinical physiologists, interventionalists, angiologists, specialists in internal medicine, pediatrics, nurses, as well as all others interested in cardiovascular medicine. The latest and up-to-date knowledge of cardiovascular medicine will be brought to and discussed with you!

2. Multidisciplinary Fight against Cardiovascular Diseases

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer worldwide, and the global population is not only affected by its mortality but we all have to live with the aftermaths and consequences of such heart and vascular diseases causing disability, impairment, and reduced quality of life. Therefore, the idea of the new international open access journal Hearts is in line with MDPI, a pioneer in scholarly open access publishing, which has supported academic communities since 1996.

3. Basic and Translational Research

Science and research in the field of heart and vessels depends on the benchside, the bedside and, most importantly, an open-minded community of international experts in the field. The translation of basic research and findings of scientific investigations into a certain problem of clinical practice in order to improve and advance human cardiovascular health is essential for Hearts and needs to be considered for such a platform by all means.

4. Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery

Cardiology and cardiovascular surgery are rapidly developing specialties in the wide field of cardiovascular medicine. It is obvious that these disciplines are each diversifying but also growing together, and the so called ‘heart-team’ is nowadays what both, researchers and clinicians highly appreciate and finally our patients clearly benefit from. Innovative developments, treatment strategies and procedures as well as new inventions in the field of cardiovascular medicine are of utmost importance, and Hearts fully supports and encourages those who wants to find an adequate platform to communicate, discuss with colleges all over the globe and finally publish their work most successfully at the right place and in the right time!
