- The gust rejection properties of multirotor VTOL aircraft can be analyzed and simulated by modelling the aerodynamics of the rotors using standard methods. The methods are suitable for simulation studies that include the aircraft dynamics, but include a nonlinear implicit equation which must be solved numerically. This can be done rapidly using standard methods.
- Trim analysis for the PVTOL shows that for operation in moderate wind (or for cruise) additional lift is generated by the rotors.
- The effect of rotor tilt on the dynamics of the PVTOL is explored and analyzed. It is seen that an inwards tilt results in increased open-loop static stability, although dynamic stability can be lost for large tilt angles. However outward tilt results in a loss of static stability and some non-minimum phase. For small tilt angles, the non-minimum phase behaviour is high frequency and hence has little effect on the control performance, but the loss of static stability means that some ‘hunting’ may result at hover.
- Simulations of both the PVTOL and quadrotor show that the outwards tilt causes a pitch down moment when subjected to a lateral wind increase. This anticipates the necessary control action to recover the lateral position by aiming the vehicle thrust into the wind and so improves the gust rejection property beyond that provided by the feedback control.
