Introduction: Universities serve as pivotal environments for understanding, promoting, and driving transformative change toward achieving the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The interconnected nature of environmental and societal challenges demands an integrated approach, particularly linking Climate Action (SDG 13) with natural science SDGs: Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Life Below Water (SDG 14), and Life on Land (SDG 15) alongside equality and fairness objectives that constantly coevolve within complex socio-ecological systems.
Aims: This research project demonstrates evidence-based practices for universities to enhance educational and research outputs while systematically integrating SDGs into institutional frameworks. Specifically, we seek to: (1) evaluate curriculum integration strategies that embed SDG principles across disciplines; (2) assess the effectiveness of campus-as-living-laboratory approaches in promoting experiential learning; (3) examine community engagement mechanisms that connect academic learning with real-world sustainability challenges; and (4) amplify educational impact and research outcomes that derive from SDG implementation in the edu-sphere.
Methods: Drawing from the Erasmus+ SDG4U Project, this study emphasizes knowledge enhancement across all SDGs through systematic curriculum updates, research support, and community awareness initiatives. University campuses function as living laboratories where students engage in hands-on experiential learning while participating in community-based sustainability projects addressing local and global challenges. This integrated approach prepares students to tackle complex sustainability issues through collaborative problem-solving and systems thinking. The interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary nature of SDG education effectively promotes informed citizenship while stimulating innovation and institutional resilience. Climate action serves as a unifying framework, given its cross-cutting impact on all aspects of social activity and life processes.
Findings: Our findings highlight technology’s dual role in identifying, mapping and promoting sustainable development goals while addressing potential environmental and social trade-offs that could impede overall SDG achievement. The research provides actionable frameworks for curriculum design, campus sustainability initiatives, and community partnerships that enhance both academic excellence and societal impact.
Conclusion: This project informs evidence-based governance processes and contributes to societal democratization ensuring intergenerational equity and fairness. Through strengthened university-community partnerships and enhanced educational processes, universities emerge as catalysts for preparing sustainability informed graduates capable of addressing the complex, interconnected challenges our planet is facing and will face in the near and far future while fostering innovation and resilience in pursuit of broader sustainability goals.
