Depression in Childhood Asthma vs. Adult-Onset Asthma: A Cross-Sectional Study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)
Highlights
- Asthma is a common chronic childhood disease, with a prevalence of 5.8% in the United States.
- Asthma is associated with other comorbidities such as major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder.
- A retrospective cross-sectional study using NHANES data from 2013 to 2018 found a significantly higher prevalence and severity of major depressive disorder and its related symptoms in participants with asthma compared to those without asthma.
- Adult-onset asthma had slightly greater and more severe major depressive disorder and related symptoms compared to childhood-onset asthma.
