Exploring the Evidence Base on the Association Between Parents’ Adverse and Positive Experiences and the Developmental, Psychological and Behavioral Outcomes of Their Offspring: A Scoping Review
Highlights
- Exposure to adversity across the lifespan can have intergenerational effects, contributing to negative developmental, psychological and behavioral outcomes in offspring.
- The preliminary and ambivalent nature of the current evidence, particularly for positive experiences, warrants further adequately powered examinations that focus on male and non-biological primary caregivers as well as adolescents.
- Recognizing that parents’ experiences can contribute to the trajectories of offspring is essential for the development of interventions that not only seek to prevent the intergenerational transmission of adversity but also those that seek to promote resilience.
- The limitations in the evidence base demonstrate that practitioners should heed current findings with caution.
