Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

A very interesting contribution on a specific topic in a defined region. The text is well prepared and appropriately supplemented with a picture attachment. From an academic point of view, perhaps more attention could be paid to methodology, but this is not necessary for the needs of the text. The reviewer therefore has no major comments or recommendations.

Author Response

Thank you for your comment and for your time.

Next time, I will make my methodology clearer at the beginning.

Reviewer 2 Report

The article has a good argumentative composition. I believe that the objectives proposed by the author are achieved.

For a good imaging of the study, I would recommend a repositioning/resizing of the images on the page.

Author Response

Thank you for your comment and for your time.

The position and size of the images on the page were not definitive, since I had to add a last one. I hope to have the support of the editors for the final version of the article.

Reviewer 3 Report

The discussion of the art itself is fulsome, deeply engaging, and scholarly. The connection with the wider sociological claim is given less attention that one would like. Surely there might be more analytical and theoretical discussion, unless the goal is primarily to describe the art. Theories of race and racism, imperialism and conflict, political and social theory, and so much more are widely available and much deeper. The possibility the paper offers of theorizing the origins and dynamics of race and racism in depth is a missed opportunity. The writing itself has gaps in style, word choice, and construction that the author or a good editor should be able to easily repair.

Author Response

Thank you for your time and comment.

Yes. My objective was mainly art.
I preferred not to go too far into social history since it is not a familiar field for me. Equally, I did not feel like theorizing about the origins and dynamics of race and racism starting from a single case study. But this is only a start towards a field of study, on which I am expanding my research. I hope to do better in the future.

As for the writing, the text was proofread by a UK mother tongue proofreader. I will send it back to her with your suggestions.
