Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is an excellent article, based on solid research. My only recommendation is that the author of the article translates all French and German quotations into English. Of course, it is just a recommendation and the author should not feel obliged to take it into account.

Author Response

Spell check is done.

All Greek quotes (from Synadinos) are translated into English. Other (small) quotes (in French and German) are kept in the original language.

Reviewer 2 Report

An interesting and timely piece. English is clear and understandable, just needs a little bit of cleaning up here and there to eliminate grammar mistakes. In terms of content, it would be perhaps interesting if the author turned to relevant historical anthropology in his conclusion on the nexus between magic, religion, and the hardships of daily life (massive literature on witchcraft: K. Thomas, Religion and the Decline of Magic, etc.).

But this is up to the author.

Author Response

English text is revised and improved.
