Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The presented work has a solid baseline and it is properly structured and presented. The subject is timely.

Conclusions do support the hypothesis,

I would, however, suggest some minor revisions of English.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper presents a method for mitigating inter-track and intersymbol interference in a bit-pattern media recording system for increased data storage.

Strength:

  • The paper is written in a clear and conscise manner with relevant background information provided.
  • The idea of introducing soft decision to traditional signal detectors for the same system is promising.

Weaknesses/suggestions:

  • The novel contribution of the paper is rather limited as most of the applied algorithms are well known especially in the wireless communications literature.
  • In the abstract, the authors claimed that a new form of generalized partial response target is proposed, from my reading of the manuscript, it is unclear which of the investigated schemes is referred to as generalized partial response?
  • The simulations were performed using fixed channel and interference matrices. I wonder how the specific choices of channel gains were made and how changing these would affect the results. The authors should at least comment on this aspect.

In general, this a an interesting paper worthy of eventual publication.
