Forage Consumption and Its Effects on the Performance of Growing Swine—Discussed in Relation to European Wild Boar (Sus scrofa L.) in Semi-Extensive Systems: A Review
Abstract
:Simple Summary
Abstract
1. Introduction
2. Description of the European Wild Boar
3. Characterisation of Production Systems
- Hunting game estates—Most commonly found in Europe, their populations have increased significantly in the last quarter of the 20th century [23,55], a change that has been largely associated with the widespread practice of supplementary feeding, reforestation, intensification of crop production, and mild winters. In Europe, hunting is the main origin of wild boar meat while farming systems that include grasslands for grazing are predominant in countries like the UK or Finland [56].
