Editorial for Mathematics Section

Mathematics represents a wide area of knowledge and is an essential subject in many technologies and applications. It provides scientists with a universal language to understand and represent various aspects of natural and artificial systems. Consequently, mathematics is widely used in applied and social sciences. Some areas, such as physics and computer science, are closely related to mathematics as they involve mathematical challenges and modeling. On the other hand, mathematics can represent a fascinating theoretical topic whose truths have no practical applications. Hence, there are mathematical fields that develop independently of other sciences. It is crucial to balance these two aspects to cover new advancements in the field, and to provide a platform where related contributions can converge, reaching a large audience and possibly serving as an engine of new discoveries and joint challenges. This is the ambitious mission of our “Mathematics” section, the starting point of which is the concept of symmetry. Indeed, symmetries, as well as asymmetries, appear in many abstract models and formulations that are crucial to approaching, understanding and solving problems or expanding research fields.
This section aims to collect high-quality works about new theories and methods and relevant applications of mathematics in the sciences, as well as review papers, to refine and improve the current level of knowledge. We welcome submissions on the following topics:
Algebra and geometry;
Applied mathematics;
Discrete mathematics and graph theory;
Dynamical systems;
Mathematical analysis;
Mathematical logic;
Mathematical physics;
Nonlinear analysis;
Numerical analysis;
Operational research;
Operator theory;
Probability and statistics;
Variational and non-variational methods.
