Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

it is the very first time in my life I found a so well-written MS since the first reading.

I have very few comments before final acceptance.

1) The MS lacks a clear paragraph with predictions, which should be placed at the end of the Introduction. Then, in the Discussion, authors should clarify which predictions were fulfilled and which ones not.

2) Lines 115-124. May you add some more references for who, as me, is not so expert in this method? The rest of the methods are clear and replicable.

3) Figure 4. Prosopis should be in italics.

4) Line 296. please, avoid the use of italics for "communally". Use italics only for species and latin names.

5) The Discussion is very long, although well-written and, in my opinion, necessary. However, I suggest authors to add a "Conclusion" paragraph summarising new results and take-home messages.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear Authors! I appreciate your efforts in improving of manuscript. Now it looks much better. However, some minor corrections are required.

  1. 109. Probably you understand not correctly. I meant “Celsius” change to “°C”. Probably “Kelvin” also is ok.
  2. 109. What the dominant types of soils in study area? (For example, major soil types in Kenya: andosols (young volcanic soils); nitisols; acrisols, alisols, lixisols and luvisols; ferralsols; planosols and vertisols.)
