Title: Factors associated with water insecurity in Mexican households using nationally representative survey data

Manuscript no:

Overall Comments: This manuscript sheds light on the backdrop of water insecurity in Mexican families, demonstrating how socioeconomic and regional differences affect water access despite existing infrastructure. The findings clearly emphasize the importance of targeted and equitable water management measures.

ABSTRACT: The abstract tackles a critical and current topic—household water insecurity. However, improving the language and polishing the sentence structure of the abstract could greatly enhance its clarity and readability.

  1. INTRODUCTION

The introduction provides important background on global and Mexican water security challenges and introduces the HWISE scale; however, it could be improved by including a brief review of relevant prior material. This would provide further context to the study, highlight existing research gaps, and strengthen the case for the current work.

  1. Materials and Methods

The section is coherent but requires minor grammatical adjustments, an explanation for the HWISE threshold, and expanded regression analysis.

  1. Discussion

The Discussion section summarises the findings, although it may be better structured.  Consider providing a more detailed interpretation, critically comparing to past studies, improving language for clarity, focusing on limitations and future research, and making policy suggestions more clearly.

  1. Conclusion

The conclusion successfully emphasizes the significance of tackling water disparities, though it could use more specificity. Enhancing the connection between discoveries and policy suggestions would render it more effective and practicable

I recommend increasing the Number of relevant references to for the manuscript efficacy.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This manuscript examines the relationship between water insecurity in Mexican households and household well-being, as well as geographic factors. The survey is conducted on a national scale with a sufficient number of participants. The raw data is subjected to rigorous statistical analysis, and the results appear to be credible.

The authors are encouraged to provide a more comprehensive discussion on potential solutions, such as enhancing infrastructure or community training, to address these challenges.

Overall, the research is intriguing and informative, and it could be further enhanced by considering the aforementioned comments. As noted by the authors, seasonal effects must be considered. To address this, a long-term survey should be implemented. The study identifies a positive correlation between reported household water insecurity and selected household and geographic variables in Mexico.
