Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript "Simulation study on the effect of non-point source pollution on water quality in the upper reaches of the Lijiang River" has covered a very important topic about source control. I support its publication. I have some suggestions and think the authors should revise the manuscript accordingly.

1. in the method section, I suggest the authors reorganize it but not present it as a lab report. Figures 1 and 2 can be combined into 1 figure. Figures 3 to 5 can be combined into one figure and shown as Figures 3-a, 3-b, and 3-c. Here are four tables in the method section and 9 tables in total. Those are too many for a research paper. The authors should keep or summarize critical tables and put some into the supporting information.

2. in the results and discussion section, the authors described it as a case study without references or citations in those two sections. It would be better if the authors could add more comprehensive discussions.

3. could the authors add more information about the water quality monitoring method (Line 115-120)? Were those grab or composite samples? Did the authors test the variation caused by sampling type (grab or composite) and sampling time during the day? Those details should be added to the manuscript.

“Simulation study on the effect of non-point source pollution on 2 water quality in the upper reaches of the Lijiang River”

The publication of the article is not appropriate due to the poor method implementation.

-- What is the purpose of the study? Write in more detail, please. In the last paragraph of the introduction, mention the purpose of the study and summarize each part of the study.

-- There are only 19 articles in the introduction. The introduction is pretty weak. Enrich the literature review.

-- Show the location of the study area in the world in figure 1.

-- Share the agricultural and industrial characteristics of the study area in Overview of the study area.

-- Equations on page 6, lines 174 and 184 should be numbered.

-- The results of the article need to be visualized.

-- What is (Z–Q) relation curve method? Please explain (Z–Q) relation curve method.

-- Add Study flowchart.

-- In the conclusion section, add the limitations of the study. Also, do not forget to write suggestions.

The manuscript water-2007533 – ”Simulation study on the effect of non-point source pollution on water quality in the upper reaches of the Lijiang River” provides an up to date regarding water quality monitoring based on the analysis of the flow of pollutants from point and diffuse sources. The Lijiang River was chosen for the study, and water quality changes in the upper course were simulated for a wet, normal and dry season.

The manuscript is well-written and easy to follow, methodology is sound and presented in details, while the results are concise, and supported by figures. It fits into aims and scope of the journal. Overall a good read! I recommend this paper for publication in Water.
