Extreme Precipitation Events on the East Coast of Brazil’s Northeast: Numerical and Diagnostic Analysis
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This paper indicates that it will examine five extreme weather events in NEB and evaluate the events using simulations using the WRF model. The paper does accomplish this objective and the results are compelling. However, the paper is of little value to the reader because after a very detailed examination of the modeling results, there is no explanation as to why these results are important --- that is: how do they inform policy or disaster preparedness and response? There is not practical application discussed, thus the paper is a “black box” and of little interest to the reader.
For example, in the abstract, there should be a simple, declarative statement that describes the practical outcome of this research.
Clearly there is an elevated expectation of climate/weather related disasters that affect the natural and human landscape in this region—how does this research inform our collective decision making to reduce risk?
Figure 1, in its current state, is of no real value to the reader. First, I suggest that you separate the dot map into a separate figure. Second, please annotate the map with the locations that you identify in the text of the paper—as a non-Brazilian, I have no idea where these places are (for example, where is the city of Recife located?). Please spell out the Koppen classifications somewhere in the caption or on the map. Also, why are there so many Koppen types listed in the legend … you only really address three.
Figure 2 is less than helpful as well. What do all of these color shades mean? This problem is also evident in figure 4.
This is a good paper that just needs some work.
