Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper describes an experiment in which regulated deficit irrigation was applied after pit hardening in two seasons in five olive groves dispersed across Spain to measure impact on yield and composition of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) compared to normal full irrigation. The research appears to have been well designed, diligently carried out with considerable effort invested in seeking any impact on organic components of EVOO, and evaluated with appropriate statistical analyses. However, the paper, otherwise of excellent quality, has some faults in English expression

Line 44 - HSD should be SHD

Line 65-69 – This sentence is too long and unintelligible. Suggest revise into shorter sentences

Various places – Review use of EVOO, VOOS, VOOs, for consistency of expression

Line 209 and elsewhere – the word “moment” is used when the authors probably mean “time”. (“Moment” is usually interpreted as meaning an instant of time, not a general expression of time.)

Line 252 is expressed as a double negative. It should read “The irrigation treatment had no influence on either of the quality or the sensory parameters included in Table 2,…”

Line 283 – replace “was” with “were” (effects is plural).

Line 408 – replace “deeper” with “deepen”

Author Response

Line 44 - HSD should be SHD. Corrected, thank you.

Line 65-69 – This sentence is too long and unintelligible. Suggest revise into shorter sentences. Changed to: “Marra et al. (2016) [17] proposed the optimal SWP values ranged between −2.5 and −3.5 MPa, to maximize water productivity and avoid yield reductions; quite similar to those of Marino et al. (2018) [16] that recommend a moderate-stress (-2.0 to -3.5 MPa) or Ahumada-Orellana et al. (2017) [18] that recommend not to cross the −3.5 MPa threshold.”

Various places – Review use of EVOO, VOOS, VOOs, for consistency of expression. Changed all of them to EVOO or EVOOs depend on the sentence.

Line 209 and elsewhere – the word “moment” is used when the authors probably mean “time”. Corrected to time.

Line 252 is expressed as a double negative. It should read “The irrigation treatment had no influence on either of the quality or the sensory parameters included in Table 2,…”. Corrected.

Line 283 – replace “was” with “were” (effects is plural). Corrected.

Line 408 – replace “deeper” with “deepen”. Corrected.

Manuscript Title:

Influence of regulated deficit irrigation on Arbequina’s crop yield and EVOOs quality and sensory profile

The paper suffers petty drawbacks that may require minor revision. I highly encourage the authors to carefully review point by point to clarify some issues and eventually improve the manuscript.

There are some problems with this manuscript

1.    Please revise some typos indicated in the revised manuscript

2.    Please rewrite the manuscript aims to be more readable

3.    In page 8 , Please add some explanation for how phenol concentration differ within different locations

Yours truly

There are some problems with this manuscript

  1. Please revise some typos indicated in the revised manuscript. Done, thanks to the reviewer for indicating (see below).
  2. Please rewrite the manuscript aims to be more readable. Done (see below).
  3. In page 8, Please add some explanation for how phenol concentration differ within different locations. We have written “There was an important effect of the location on almost all the phenolic compounds. The EVOOs from Madrid showed the higher content in oleuropein and TPC (6.891 and 496.8 mg·kg-1 respectively), opposite the EVOOs from Alicante that showed the lower TPC (168.6 mg·kg-1).” Changed to “There was an important effect of the location on almost all the phenolic compounds. The EVOOs from Madrid showed the higher content in TPC (496.8 mg·kg-1) followed by Lleida in TPC (377 mg·kg-1), opposite to the EVOOs from Alicante with the lower TPC (169 mg·kg-1). Navarra and Tarragona’s EVOOs had an intermediate concentration (274 and 202 mg·kg-1, respectively). Regarding oleuropein, Madrid’s EVOOs had 6.89 mg·kg-1, around 4 folds more than the EVOOs from Tarragona and Navarra (1.85 and 1.52 mg·kg-1, respectively), with an intermediate position of Alicante and Lleida (3.38 and 3.00 mg·kg-1, respectively).”

Line 50 – change “as” for “including”. Done.

Line 56- change “and to” for “with”. Done.

Line 79 – rephrase “The aim of this work is to determine the effect on quantity and quality virgin olive oil comparing full irrigated with regulated deficit irrigated treatments in superhigh density olive orchards of Arbequina cultivar in five different locations (Center, East North and Northeast Spain) during two consecutive crop seasons.”. Changed to “The aim of this work is to determine the effect on extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) of Arbequina cultivar comparing full irrigated with regulated deficit irrigated superhigh density olive orchards. For this purpose the quantity and quality of the EVOOs of five different olive orchard (Center, East North and Northeast Spain) under both irrigation treatments were analyzed during two consecutive crop seasons.”

Line 232, 247, 328 and 362 – change “content” to “%”. Changed to “percentage”.

Line 243 – change “found fruit” to “found that fruit”. Changed.

Line 262, 267, 284 and 323 – change “content” to “concentration”. Changed.

Line 316 – change “content” to “level”. Changed.

Line 330 – change “content” to “%”. Changed to “on different sterols percentage and total sterols content”

Line 348 – change “content” to “level”. Changed.
