Title: Stable nickel-based metal-organic framework containing  thiophene/diimidazole units for effective near-infrared photothermal conversion

Authors: Shui-Ren Liu, Li-Long Dang, Xiang-Ran Pei, Ting-Ting Zhang, Tian Chen, Fu-Xuan Ren

In this article, a new Ni-based metal-organic framework was synthesized and characterized by Single-crystal analysis, XRPD, TGA, IR, and UV/Vis-NIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, under laser illumination newly synthesized material, rapidly increases the temperature from room to 45.2 oC, making this material promising for photo-thermal therapy. Although the main idea of this article is well, the article has major shortcomings and inconsistencies. The overall impression is that the article was written in a hurry and without excessive immersion in the matter.

1)     There is no assignment of XRPD, as well as no explanation of obtained XRPD.

2)     The large discrepancy between Yexperimental and Ysimulate is evident (Figure 2a). Please provide Yexp-Ysim curve and offer a better explanation of the results obtained.

3)     Could you connect the results (and appropriate structure) obtained for single crystal analysis and powder analysis? Is there any pattern recognized?

4)     Increase X, Y, and Z-axis in Figure 1.

5)     Provide IR spectra of BBI4PY and L1 and put additional and improved comments for all bands involving the complex. The emphasis should be on similarities/differences of particular bands, especially bonds link to π→π interactions.

6)     Do you talk about Uv/Vis or UV/Vis-NIR spectrophotometer? Please uniform measuring technique throughout the manuscript, also put additional information in Material and Methods about the used spectrophotometer and applied conditions.

7)     Fig 9. does not exist. (line 152)

8)     Fig 11.  does not exist also. (line 140)

9)     What is presented in Figure 6? Give a detailed explanation in the main text.

10)  Some sentences are not finished, nor can they begin in the way given in the text (line 18, line 35, line 133…)

11)  Complex 1 is marked somewhere as complex 1 and somewhere as 1, please uniform that.

12)  Line 97 ... TG analyses curve of 1 was displayed in Figure 1... This is not true ... Displayed in Figure 2b.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper reports the synthesis and characterization of a Ni based MOF with interesting photothermal properties. However the crystal structure in which all the discussions are based is of poor quality and that should be mentioned in the paper. The check_cif file reports alerts that should be taken care prior to publication. In particular the refined structure and the molecular formula should be corrected and with chemical correctness. fractional atoms should not be used because they are of no chemical significance. At most an overall occupation factor should be used for independent molecule such as solvents. A refinement with so many restrains as reported in the check_cif should have a detailed explanation in the SI files.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors modified the manuscript and the revised version of the manuscript was significantly improved. The manuscript may be accepted for publication in the journal Catalyst. Authors should replace only Figures 5 and 6, as well as their numbers in the text so that the figures would be numbered following their number of appearance.
