Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This article describes a novel framework for the application of 3D printing machines in repairing spare parts. Although the article contents can be useful for the researchers in this field, it requires some modifications before publication.

1)      In the abstract section, report the numerical result of the study.

2)      In the introduction section, make a discussion about the application of 3D printing in different fields such as constriction and biomedical sciences.

3)      In the introduction section, make a discussion about the new approach used in additive manufacturing industries for improving the performance. For example, application of vision systems in 3D printing applications. For this purpose, cite the following articles:

-         Mendřický, Radomír, and Petr Keller. "Analysis of Object Deformations Printed by Extrusion of Concrete Mixtures Using 3D Scanning." Buildings 13.1 (2023): 191.

-         Barjuei, E. Shojaei, et al. "Real-time vision-based control of industrial manipulators for layer-width setting in concrete 3D printing applications." Advances in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (2022): 100094.

4)      A separated section about the building materials and different kinds of materials is needed for this paper.

5)      In the conclusion section, challenges of this work and future works should be mentioned and discussed.

Reviewer 2 Report

This paper thoroughly discusses the workflow for repair parts using 3D printing. A detailed framework was developed, and each step was discussed regarding repair successfulness. I have few suggestions and questions about this paper.

1: In this paper, all cases were based on FDM printing techniques. There are many other 3D printing methods with broader materials selection and higher printing successful rate. The workflow and discussion in this paper may not be suitable for other 3D printing methods. I suggest using FDM 3D printing instead of 3D printing in this paper.

2: Resolution is an important factor for 3D printing. It can dramatically influence the final repair successfulness and printing efficiency. I suggest adding printing resolution choice in your 3DPfR framework.

3: Effect of each process step correctness on the repair result was discussed. However, how does the correctness of each step be identified?

4: In the process step correctness and repair result relation analysis, if multiple incorrect happened for a same failed repair, how do you further interpret such failure case?

Reviewer 3 Report

This is a well-written paper on the use of 3D printing for repairing purposes. They have systematically reviewed the relevant literature and come up with a well-established framework for 3DPfR. After the following minor revisions, it may be published.

- Software and database are not countable, you shouldn't use 'a software' or 'a database'.

- Place figures and tables after they are mentioned in the text.

- Provide the longer versions of the abbreviations before they are used.

- What is the curriculum of the masterclass? Discuss how it can be improved for better outputs of the designers?
