Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Comments

The review focused on Ecosystem Services Research in Rural Areas. The study seems interesting. However, there are still many problems, such as:

1.      Line 14, the first abbreviation “NCP” should be written in full. Besides, there are some abbreviations without full meaning, such as “WOS”, “LCS” and so on.

2.      The letters and numbers in Figure 2 need more explanations in the legend.

3.      Where is Section 3.2.3?

4.      In Figure 4., the “Year” column seems meaningless, and why is it all 1991?

5.      In Line 86, the retrieval time was suggested as 2022.12.31.12:00. Then in Figure 1, the curve will not decline in 2022.

6.      In Line 80 to 83, the filter criteria formula is confusing due to the non-standard use of quotation marks and brackets. It is suggested to write each filter criteria separately.

7.      In Line 85, 3000 works of literature were selected as research objects. However, in Figure 1, there are less than 2000 of publications. It needs more information.

In this study, three literature analysis software including HistCite, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace, are applied to reveal and visualize the research status and prospect of existing research on Ecosystem Services in Rural Areas. Suggestions are provided as follows:

1. Are there possible reasons for the significant drop in the number of publications in 2021 that the authors could explore further?

2. Are there particularities in the evolution of the spatial and temporal distribution of the studies of different clusters at different points in time? Can the mechanisms behind them be further explored?

3. This paper presents several main directions of research, how do the different directions relate to each other? Is there a system or framework for research?

4. The crosstalk and implications of the results of the literature analysis for the actual research logic should be the focus of this review study and it is hoped that the authors will focus on this rather than simply stating the results of the literature analysis.

5. Based on existing research advances, what do the authors see as the future trends in ecosystem services research in rural areas?

6. The English of your manuscript must be improved before resubmission. We strongly suggest that you obtain assistance from a colleague who is well-versed in English or whose native language is English.
