Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors aim to reveal the causal relationship between airport development and regional economy and find that the impact of economic growth on airports is more significant than the impact of airports on economic growth. This is an exciting topic. However, there are still a few aspects that should be improved. I focus here only on a few major points, which are hopefully easy for the authors to consider in the revision.

  • In the introduction (lines 59-62), the authors can better explain why it is important to investigate the relationship (between airport development and regional economy) using a wider spatial coverage?

  • What is the spatial unit for analysis (lines 183-195)? Could the authors provide more justifications on the spatial analysis unit? Also, how the modifiable area unit problem can be addressed?
  • The authors should also clarify the selection of the case study areas. It’s not clear why Jiangsu is representative and how the findings can be extended to the other regions.

  • The policy implications can be further strengthened (lines 321-324), particularly in how to leverage airport development to improve the regional economy. It’s not only about the airport itself but also the related industries introduced by the infrastructure development. For instance, would it be an alternative to develop airport-based sub-centers in regional polycentric growth in the Chinese context (suggest reading, e.g., doi.org/10.1080/00420980120035295 and doi.org/10.1177/2399808319864972)?

  • More discussions can be added to highlight the NEW findings from this research. The authors can add a new sub-section for discussion and link the findings back to aviation/regional economic literature/theories.
