Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

General comments:

The article presents a very critical and a proactive sustainable topic. The Authors discussed the topic in an implicit qualitative method that can accepted due to the challenges in getting data from governmental entities. However, authors discussed the environmental impact due to suburbanization while there is little mentioned about the social sustainability. The language is very good and needs to be amended in term of avoiding the use of “we, our, etc.”.

Here are some specific comments:

Line 20-21: Check the language of both sentences.

Line 140: Why the year 2011 is selected to be the upper limit while all figures under are discussing 2018?

Table 1: What is the age distribution? Are these people migrated central core or the newborn babies are more concentrated in these areas over the last two decades?

Figure 3 and Line 319: What are the reasons behind the increase in forest area in densely and sparsely populated outskirts?

Lines 454-458: It would be better to explain the problem of albedo, environmental and social sustainability within this paragraph. The problem of the article is not clear in this paragraph.

Line 545: How to justify that the changes are within the average?

Thank you for the opportunity to read this article, of course it is of interest and represents a fairly relevant topic. What I would like to draw the authors' attention to when we talk about sustainable development is that such aspects as man, nature and the economy are undoubtedly equally important to us. In my opinion, in this work, not much attention was paid to the "man" and perhaps in the future it is worth paying more attention to the social. I would also like to say that the 2011 data that the authors refer to is quite old, it might be worth doing a little field research to see if it's up to date if we can afford it in terms of resources. It may be interesting for you to further explore the experience of the post-Soviet space, it has the same problems, not only in the Baltic countries, but also, for example, in Russia, in large cities with a million inhabitants.

Very interesting research, which has been using appropiate methodology, has led in consequence to very well-structuralized paper. The scope of the research is very up-to date, especially for the countries of Central Europe.

Couple of small changes, which could be introduced :

lines 230-231 - please explain exactly the depopulation trends in Hungary, since the scale of the process might be significant to the understanding of the importance of your research

line 434 - while writing on suburbanization in Poland (which you do quite often, comparing the hungarian situation to the situation in other post-socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe) , you need to refere to the works of prof. Katarzyna Kajdanek. Her book "Suburbanizacja po polsku" (2012), which has a lot in common with the idea of your paper, has not been translated, as far as I know. But there are a lot of papers and articles in English, which might erich your references.

Very good job! Congratulations!
