Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In principle, the paper is well done, and the research questions are good. But, the research sample is very small for giving some bigger conclusions. Also, it is not usual to measure motivation with only a few states. We usually use some validated scales.

Please authors write that the research sample is small and that it is not possible to give some greater conclusions about this topic.

Reviewer 3 Report

This study was to explore whether the competitive factors in game learning would affect students’ English vocabulary learning effect and motivation. The authors used Quizlet Live game as a digital game-based vocabulary learning platform to conduct competitive activities. However, there are still many drawbacks for improvement, especially in all Tables, which are listed below for revision. The authors need to carefully revise the typesetting and check the accuracy of all Tables.

1.     In Table 1, “Pre-test” appears in the wrong place. Please check the place for “Pre-test” and “Post-test” and make their place consistent.

2.     In Table 1, generally speaking, the star sign (*) means significance it should appear in p-value. The mean among class 1, class 2, and class 3 existed a significant difference in post-test, the star sign (*) should appear in .010* instead of 4.91*.

3.     In Table 2, the star sign (*) should be appeared in .032* instead of 4.86*.

4.   In Table 3, “Pre-test” appears in the wrong place. Please check the place for “Pre-test” and “Post-test” and make their place consistent.

5.     In Table 3, the star sign (*) should appear in .000*** instead of 16.93***.

6.      In Table 1 and Table 3, the font size of (ηp2, ηp2) is not consistent. Please check carefully whether the mathematical symbols on both sides are the same
