Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I managed to read up to Discussion. I seriously doubt that all authors read the MS before submission. A paragraph from instruction to authors is still in the body of the MS. Figs 2,3 and 5 are missing. I have never seen anything like this.

English needs attention and there are many other issues.

Response: We are very sorry for the wrong word format of the manuscript, several figures were lost in the word manuscript, but all the figures are there in pdf. We revised the manuscript according to the comments in the attached pdf file by reviewer 1. We checked the manuscript this round and provided all figures.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear Authors
I had reviewed the  manuscript titled “Nutshell
physicochemical characteristics of different hazel cultivars and their defensive activity toward
Curculio nucum (Cole- optera: Curculionidae)” and found that MS is significant in the areas   and could be accepted  after major revision
The following comments are given to the authors to improve the manuscript.
1. Basically in a scientific study we know that internal defense is needed to protect an
organism. Motility may be a reason but basic thing the plants are attacked due to the
rich nutrients , as they are the primary producers. Modify the first line of the paper.
2. Morphology plays role in inherent one show mention it like that.
3. The same family plants will be more preferred if any study available on them please
mention.
4. Provide geographical locations of the experimental field. You can also provide the
photographs indicating the plant spacings , net covering the plants etc.
5. Please mention , the selected plants were healthy or not? The cultivation age ,
maturity different or same.
6. The cellulose is also affected by humidity so we need to know what were the
humidity levels ? Is there any consideration of humidity in this study.
7. The cellulose and lignin are the materials which helps in the formation of a plant part ,
specifically saying the structural molecules ; the resistant word willnot be appropriate
in this regard.
8. The conclusion part should contain one or two lines of future prospective of the
study.

Reviewer 2 Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Dear Authors

Comment: I had reviewed the manuscript titled “Nutshell physicochemical characteristics of different hazel cultivars and their defensive activity toward Curculio nucum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)” and found that MS is significant in the areas and could be accepted after major revision.

Response: Thank you for your approval.

The following comments are given to the authors to improve the manuscript.

Comments 1. Basically in a scientific study we know that internal defense is needed to protect an organism. Motility may be a reason but basic thing the plants are attacked due to the rich nutrients, as they are the primary producers. Modify the first line of the paper.

Response: Thank you for your suggestion, we have revised the section of the introduction, and added the relevant content about basic reasons plants avoid an attack in lines 31-33.

Comments 2. Morphology plays role in inherent one show mention it like that.

Response: Thank you for the suggestion, morphology is better to describe the following examples than traits, we mentioned it in lines 48-58.

Comments 3. The same family plants will be more preferred if any study available on them please mention.

Response: Thank you for the suggestion, but the study about the physiology process of other species in the same family as hazelnut is not available, this is the novelty of our study. We revised the last paragraph of the introduction to mention the novelty.

Comments 4. Provide geographical locations of the experimental field. You can also provide the photographs indicating the plant spacings, net covering the plants etc.

Response: We added the geographical locations in line 108, we are so sorry we don’t have the pictures about the planting space.

Comments 5. Please mention, the selected plants were healthy or not? The cultivation age,

maturity different or same.

Response: We revised the section on experimental design in lines 127-129, and provided the age and health condition of selected trees.

Comments 6. The cellulose is also affected by humidity so we need to know what were the humidity levels? Is there any consideration of humidity in this study?

Response: Thank you for the suggestion, we aim to compare the different effects of hazel cultivars which plant at the same location, the air humidity is similar, and the water content of the nutshell may be different among the three hazel cultivars, we will measure them in the future research.

Comments 7. The cellulose and lignin are the materials which helps in the formation of a plant part, specifically saying the structural molecules; the resistant word will not be appropriate in this regard.

Response: We changed the word resistant to defense.

Comments 8. The conclusion part should contain one or two lines of future prospective of the

study.

Response: We added two sentences about the future outlook in lines 359-362.
