The Reliability and Validity of an Instrumented Device for Tracking the Shoulder Range of Motion

Rotator cuff tears are common in individuals over 40, and physical therapy is often prescribed post-surgery. However, access can be limited by cost, convenience, and insurance coverage. CuffLink is a telehealth rehabilitation system that integrates the Strengthening and Stabilization System mechanical exerciser with the interACTION mobile health platform. The system includes a triple-axis accelerometer (LSM6DSOX + LIS3MDL FeatherWing), a rotary encoder, a VL530X time-of-flight sensor, and two wearable BioMech Health IMUs to capture upper-limb motion. CuffLink is designed to facilitate controlled, home-based exercise while enabling clinicians to remotely monitor joint function. Concurrent validity and test–retest reliability were used to assess device accuracy and repeatability. The results showed moderate to good validity for shoulder rotation (ICC = 0.81), device rotation (ICC = 0.94), and linear tracking (from zero: ICC = 0.75 and RMSE = 2.41; from start: ICC = 0.88 and RMSE = 2.02) and good reliability (e.g., RMSEs as low as 1.66 cm), with greater consistency in linear tracking compared to angular measures. Shoulder rotation and abduction exhibited higher variability in both validity and reliability measures. Future improvements will focus on manufacturability, signal stability, and force sensing. CuffLink supports accessible, data-driven rehabilitation and holds promise for advancing digital health in orthopedic recovery. Full article

Reliable cost-effective traffic monitoring stations are a key component of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). While modern surveillance camera systems provide a high amount of data, due to high installation price or invasion of drivers’ personal privacy, they are not the right technology. Therefore, in this paper we introduce a traffic flow parameterization system, using a built-in pavement sensing hub of a pair of AMR (anisotropic magneto resistance) magnetic field and MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) accelerometer sensors. In comparison with inductive loops, AMR magnetic sensors are significantly cheaper, have lower installation price and cause less intrusion to the road. The developed system uses magnetic signature to estimate vehicle speed and length. While speed is obtained from the cross-correlation method, a novel vehicle length estimation algorithm based on characterization of the derivative of magnetic signature is presented. The influence of signature filtering, derivative step and threshold parameter on estimated length is investigated. Further, accelerometer sensors are employed to detect when the wheel of vehicle passes directly over the sensor, which cause distorted magnetic signatures. Results show that even distorted signatures can be used for speed estimation, but it must be treated with a more robust method. The database during the real-word traffic and hazard environmental condition was collected over a 0.5-year period and used for method validation. Full article

The navigation system has been around for the last several years. Recently, the emergence of miniaturized sensors has made it easy to navigate the object in an indoor environment. These sensors give away a great deal of information about the user (location, posture, communication patterns, etc.), which helps in capturing the user’s context. Such information can be utilized to create smarter apps from which the user can benefit. A challenging new area that is receiving a lot of attention is Indoor Localization, whereas interest in location-based services is also rising. While numerous inertial measurement unit-based indoor localization techniques have been proposed, these techniques have many shortcomings related to accuracy and consistency. In this article, we present a novel solution for improving the accuracy of indoor navigation using a learning to perdition model. The design system tracks the location of the object in an indoor environment where the global positioning system and other satellites will not work properly. Moreover, in order to improve the accuracy of indoor navigation, we proposed a learning to prediction model-based artificial neural network to improve the prediction accuracy of the prediction algorithm. For experimental analysis, we use the next generation inertial measurement unit (IMU) in order to acquired sensing data. The next generation IMU is a compact IMU and data acquisition platform that combines onboard triple-axis sensors like accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers. Furthermore, we consider a scenario where the prediction algorithm is used to predict the actual sensor reading from the noisy sensor reading. Additionally, we have developed an artificial neural network-based learning module to tune the parameter of alpha and beta in the alpha–beta filter algorithm to minimize the amount of error in the current sensor readings. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the system, we carried out a number of experiments through which we observed that the alpha–beta filter with a learning module performed better than the traditional alpha–beta filter algorithm in terms of RMSE. A resonant microbeam accelerometer of a novel highly symmetric structure based on MEMS bulk-silicon technology is proposed and some numerical modeling results for this scheme are presented. The accelerometer consists of two proof masses, four supporting hinges, two anchors, and a vibrating triple beam, which is clamped at both ends to the two proof masses. LPCVD silicon rich nitride is chosen as the resonant triple beam material, and parameter optimization of the triple-beam structure has been performed. The triple beam is excited and sensed electromagnetically by film electrodes located on the upper surface of the beam. Both simulation and experimental results show that the novel structure increases the scale factor of the resonant accelerometer, and ameliorates other performance issues such as cross axis sensitivity of insensitive input acceleration, etc. Full article
