Topological orientation structures in chiral nematic liquid crystals, such as torons, exhibit promising optical properties and are of increasing interest for applications in photonic devices. However, despite this attention, their polarization and phase dynamics during formation remain insufficiently explored. In this work, we investigate the dynamic optical response of a toron generated by focused femtosecond infrared laser pulses. A custom-designed polarization holographic microscope is employed to simultaneously record four polarization-resolved interferograms in a single exposure. This enables the real-time reconstruction of the Jones matrix, providing a complete description of the local polarization transformation introduced by the formation of the topological structure. The study demonstrates that torons can facilitate spin–orbit coupling of light in a manner analogous to q-plates, highlighting their potential for advanced vector beam shaping and topological photonics applications. Liquid crystal torons, localized topological structures, are known for their stability and dynamic behaviour in response to external stimuli, making them attractive for advanced material applications. In this study, we investigate the flow of torons in chiral nematic liquid crystals around obstacles. We simulate the fluid flow and director field interactions using a hybrid numerical method combining lattice Boltzmann and finite difference techniques. Our results reveal that the toron dynamical behaviour depends strongly on the impact parameter from the obstacle. At impact parameters smaller than half cholesteric pitch, the flowing toron is destabilized by the interaction with the obstacle; otherwise, the flowing toron follows a trajectory with a deflection which decays exponentially with the impact parameter. Additionally, we explore the scattering of torons by multiple obstacles, providing insights into how the dynamics of these structures respond to complex environments. Full article

Magnetic hopfions are three-dimensional topological solitons embedded into a homogeneously magnetized background. The internal structure of hopfions is distinguished by the linked preimages—closed loops with a single orientation of the magnetization on the target space S2—and is thus characterized by the integer Hopf index QH. Alternatively, hopfions can be visualized as a result of the swirling of two-dimensional bimerons around the direction of an applied magnetic field. Since the bimeron consists of a circular core and an anti-skyrmion crescent, two hopfion varieties can be achieved with either bimeron constituent facing the hopfion interior. In bulk cubic helimagnets, however, the applied magnetic field leads to a spontaneous collapse of hopfions, i.e., the eigen-energy of hopfions has the minimum for zero hopfion radius R. Anti-hopfions with QH=1, in this case, pass through the intermediate toron state with two-point defects. Here, we demonstrate that the competing cubic and exchange anisotropies inherent in cubic non-centrosymmetric magnets (e.g., in the Mott insulator Cu2OSeO3) as a third level of the hierarchy of energy scales following the exchange and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions, may shift the energy minimum into the region of finite hopfion radii. This work analyzes the magnetic configurations of cylindrical nanowires with a bulk Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and easy-plane anisotropy. We show that this system allows the nucleation of a metastable toron chain even when no out-of-plane anisotropy exists in the nanowire’s top and bottom surfaces, as usually required. The number of nucleated torons depends on the nanowire length and the strength of an external magnetic field applied to the system. The size of each toron depends on the fundamental magnetic interactions and can be controlled by external stimuli, allowing the use of these magnetic textures as information carriers or nano-oscillator elements. Our results evidence that the topology and structure of the torons yield a wide variety of behaviors, revealing the complex nature of these topological textures, which should present an exciting interaction dynamic, depending on the initial conditions. The aim of this study was to explore the differences among between adherence to physical activity (PA) and sociodemographic variables, body composition, and physical fitness levels in older adults (>65 years). A number of 2712 participants (2086 female; 76.92%) ranging from 65 to 92 years, participated in the study. Stages of change (SoC) for PA from the transtheoretical model of change (TTM), together with different sociodemographic variables, physical fitness tests (Senior Fitness Test), and waist and hip circumferences were evaluated. Significant differences were found in age, gender, educational level, current income, physical fitness test, and body composition (all of them, p < 0.05), according to the different SoC. Greater adherence to PA practice (action and maintenance stages) was related to better academic level, higher economic income, the male gender, better results in the physical fitness test, and healthier anthropometrics perimeters. Future research is needed to identify the relationship between these variables longitudinally. Full article

The Effect of the Economic Crisis on Adolescents’ Perceived Health and Risk Behaviors: A Multilevel Analysis

Background: Previous studies have analyzed the impact of economic crises on adult’s health and lifestyles, but evidence among children and adolescents is limited. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of the economic crisis on self-perceived health and some risk behaviors in the Spanish adolescent population. Methods: We used data from four waves (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014) of the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey in Spain. Separate multilevel logistic and linear regression models were applied for health complaints, self-rated health, life satisfaction, smoking, alcohol consumption, and breakfast skipping. Annual change in Spanish regional unemployment rates was used as a proxy of the economic crisis. An increasing set of control variables were included, consisting of individual, socioeconomic, and family and peer relationships indicators. Median odds ratios were estimated to quantify the cross-region and cross-school variation. Results: Increases in unemployment rates were linked to a higher risk of poorer health and bad habits in the simplest models. The effect was no longer statistically significant when indicators of family and peer relationships were included, suggesting a protective effect against the impact of the economic crisis. Our findings also show that schools had a larger effect on health and lifestyles than regions. Conclusion: The child’s social context—family, peers, school, and region—play an important role on the effects of the economic crisis on health and risk behaviors. Full article
