The rapid evolution of smart cities relies heavily on advancements in wireless communication systems and extensive IoT networks. This paper offers a comprehensive review of the critical role and future potential of integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to enhance Internet of Vehicles (IoV) systems within beyond-fifth-generation (B5G) and sixth-generation (6G) networks. We explore the combination of quasi-optical millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals with UAV-enabled, RIS-assisted networks and their applications in urban environments. This review covers essential areas such as channel modeling and position-aware beamforming in dynamic networks, including UAVs and IoVs. Moreover, we investigate UAV navigation and control, emphasizing the development of obstacle-free trajectory designs in dense urban areas while meeting kinodynamic and motion constraints. The emerging potential of RIS-equipped UAVs (RISeUAVs) is highlighted, along with their role in supporting IoVs and in mobile edge computing. Optimization techniques, including convex programming methods and machine learning, are explored to tackle complex challenges, with an emphasis on studying computational complexity and feasibility for real-time operations. Additionally, this review highlights the integrated localization and communication strategies to enhance UAV and autonomous ground vehicle operations. This tutorial-style overview offers insights into the technical challenges and innovative solutions of the next-generation wireless networks in smart cities, with a focus on vehicular communications. Finally, future research directions are outlined. Full article

Beam-switching antennas based on quasi-optical beamformers can provide cost-effective solutions for high-frequency communication applications. Here, we propose a wide-angle beam-switching planar lens antenna based on the recently presented virtual image lens. The antenna operates from 24 to 28 GHz and produces a beam that can be steered in a 100-degrees range in one plane with less than 2 dB simulated gain variation over the angular range and operational band. The performance of the presented antenna is similar to reported lens antennas with stable gain, but the proposed lens requires a smaller refractive index range to be realized, which alleviates the manufacturing. This paper reports on the design and experimental validation of a fully-metallic double-ridged waveguide 10 × 10 Rotman lens additively manufactured as a single part. The wide band operation of this quasi-optical beamformer enables us to cover the uplink and downlink frequencies allocated to satellite communications in the K/Ka-band, from 17.3 GHz to 30 GHz. The feeding port design was adjusted to enable vertical printing, thus minimizing the use of supporting structures. A prototype was manufactured and tested. The reported results indicate losses in the range of 0.5 dB in the lower-frequency band and 0.8 dB in the upper-frequency band, including the waveguide transitions added for test purposes. The measured reflection and coupling coefficients remain below −11.5 dB over the operating band. The standard deviation of the residual phase error across the array ports is below 5° in simulation and below 10° in measurements. Array factors synthesized using the scattering parameters confirm the good stability of the beamforming functionality over the wide frequency band analyzed. This monolithic design is a promising step toward more integrated antenna systems, such as a compact dual-stack configuration for planar array design. Full article

Wireless power transfer promises to revolutionize the way in which we use and power mobile devices. However, low transfer efficiencies prevent this technology from seeing wide scale real-world adoption. The aim of this work is to use quasioptics to develop a system composed of a dielectric lens fed by a phased array to reduce spillover losses, increasing the beam efficiency, while working on the antenna system’s Fresnel zone. The DC-RF electronics, digital beamforming and beam-steering by an FPGA, and radiating 4 × 4 microstrip patch phased array have been developed and experimented upon, while the lens has been designed and simulated. This paper details these preliminary results, where the phased array radiation pattern was measured, showing that the beam is being generated and steered as expected, prompting the lens construction for the complete system experimentation. The advanced design of a millimeter-wave quasi-optical beamforming device (QOBD) based on the ferroelectric ceramic was elaborated and considered. Among the advantages of the proposed design are simplicity and cost-effectiveness in contrast to conventional analog and digital beamforming devices based on array antennas. The use of ferroelectric ceramic in the QOBD design allows operating in a wide frequency range up to 100 GHz. The advanced topology of discrete radiotransparent electrodes to provide a realization of different beamforming functions such as beam focusing and beam scanning was considered. The prototype of the proposed QOBD was designed to operate at 60 GHz. The measured radiation pattern of the QOBD prototype is in good agreement with the simulated one. Measurements demonstrate decreasing of beamwidth of the primary antenna radiation pattern by the lens prototype operating in the beam focusing regime. Full article
