Work-Related Disorders in Public Transportation Drivers and the Length of Exposure

Background/Objectives: Public transportation drivers are exposed to a variety of occupational hazards. The scope of this study is to describe the most significant changes in symptoms and work-related disorders in the last decade in a sample of professional drivers from a large Romanian city, and, in particular, the cardio-metabolic and musculoskeletal impact. Methods: A retrospective study on 186 professional tram, trolley, and bus drivers from a total number of 344 employed by the company was conducted. The initial values (pre-employment) of the BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, fasting glycemia, and musculoskeletal complaints were compared to the values of the last employment check-up. Results: After an average follow-up period of 11 years, BMI increased from 27.69 (SD = 4.68) to 30.06 (SD = 5.2) (p < 0.0001), cholesterol from 201.7 (SD = 39.87) to 212.62 (SD = 42.51), (p = 0.04). The number of cases of high blood pressure (25 to 56, p < 0.0001) and musculoskeletal complaints increased from 3 initial cases to 26 cases of neck pain (p = 0.07), from 2 to 49 cases of dorsal pain (p = 0.02), and from 18 to 59 cases of lumbar pain (p < 0.0001). High blood pressure and low back pain were significantly correlated with tenure, independent of other factors. Conclusions: As tenure is important in the development of cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases, specific interventions should be developed in the early stages of the drivers’ career. Background: The erythrocyte ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) over total fatty acids, the omega-3 index (O3I), has been suggested as an overall health marker and to motivate corporate health recommendations. We set out to assess the O3I status in a working population, the differences between normal and rotating shift employees, the consumption of omega-3 rich food and whether recommendations to increase intake of omega-3 rich foods can improve the O3I. Methods: Employees registered for their occupational health check-up were offered to participate in a pre-post study at the Ludwigshafen (Germany) site including an assessment of their O3I at baseline and after 4 months (follow-up) and two subsequent food frequency questionnaires. For those with O3I below 8%, a recommendation was provided to increase the intake of omega-3 fatty acid rich food and to take advantage of the employees’ catering service with its enhanced fatty seafood offer during the study period. Dietary intake of EPA and DHA, erythrocyte fatty acid profiles, clinical and lifestyle parameters were assessed. Results: In 500 employees (26.6% female, 21–64 years, median age: 47 years [IQR: 37–53]), at baseline the overall mean O3I was 4.1 ± 1.1% (99.6% of O3I assessed were below 8%), higher in women, in participants with “normal” body weight, upper employment grade, and non-smokers, but not different between regular and rotating shift workers. The three fifths of the cohort also participating in the follow-up increased their EPA and DHA intake by 0.1 g/d and their O3I by 0.5 percentage points. Conclusion: This study provides essential data on omega-3 erythrocyte concentrations in a clinically healthy German working population and the challenges of increasing the O3I with dietary recommendations even in study participants motivated to follow up on their omega-3 status. This study was aimed at identifying the role of social networking information (SNI) on pre-employment background checks (PBCs) of job applicants involving a single mediating variable, sustainable organizational reputation (SOR). In addition to that, we conducted a multi-group analysis to examine whether the direct and mediating effects were stronger in terms of gender difference. For investigation, a structured questionnaire was utilized to collect data from 1138 respondents working as hiring professionals in Bangladesh applying purposive sampling. Finally, 798 valid samples were considered. Structural equation modeling was applied using AMOS 24 to test the hypothesized relationships. The results indicated that SNI is positively and significantly related to PBCs. Additionally, it was revealed that SOR can partially mediate the direct relationship between SNI and PBCs. Furthermore, the study did not reveal any noteworthy gender differences influencing these relationships. The paper is expected to assist academicians involved in investigating pre-selection background checks and hiring professionals looking for further academic references to formulate a proper social media background policy. Background: Varicella seroprevalence in healthcare workers at a tertiary care hospital in Taiwan was assessed following the inclusion of varicella zoster vaccination in the national vaccination schedule in 2004 and was made a hospital policy in 2008. Methods: Seroprevalence data were extracted from records of pre-employment health check-ups performed between 2008 and 2018 at a single medical center. Staff with complete medical records and anti-varicella zoster virus immunoglobulin G (VZV IgG) titers were included. Sex and age group differences in terms of geometric mean titer (GMT) were compared using analysis of variance and chi-squared tests. The significance of the correlation between age and the anti-VZV IgG titer was tested by linear regression. The odds of significant associations among age, sex, vocation, and the years of national and hospital adoption of vaccination were determined using univariate and multivariate analyses. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 7314 eligible participants, 5625 (76.90%) were women, and the mean patient age was 26.80 ± 8.00 years. The lowest VZV-positivity rates were in 18–20-year-old women (85.16%; GMT, 362.89 mIU/mL) and men (87.59%; GMT, 288.07 mIU/mL). VZV positivity increased with age (p < 0.001). Participants born before 2002 were more likely to be seropositive than those born after 2003 (odds ratio, 2.51 vs. 1.0; p < 0.001). The lowest seropositive rate was found in the nursing staff (88.91%; 95% confidence interval, 87.74%–90.05%). Varicella vaccine boosters have been required at pre-employment health check-ups since 2008 if anti-VZV antibodies were not detectable. A follow-up evaluation found marginal significant differences in the odds ratios of seropositivity after 2007 (p = 0.052), especially in 2008 and 2014 (p < 0.05) after the hospital policy launched. Conclusions: Despite public health efforts, a small number of healthcare workers were inadequately protected, and antibody titers were lower than required to maintain herd immunity. For effective prevention of nosocomial infection, VZV IgG status should be documented for all HCWs, and susceptible HCWs should be vaccinated to avoid outbreaks. Pre-employment screening and vaccination have increased immunity and need to be conducted to ensure protection of vulnerable patients. Full article
