To solve the problem of snow on steel bridge areas endangering traffic safety and low road traffic efficiency in winter, conductive gussasphait concrete (CGA) was prepared by mixing conductive phase materials (graphene and carbon fiber) into Gussasphalt (GA). First, through high-temperature rutting test, low-temperature bending test, immersion Marshall test, freeze–thaw splitting test and fatigue test, the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water stability and fatigue performance of CGA with different conductive phase materials were systematically studied. Second, the influence of different content of conductive phase materials on the conductivity of CGA was studied through the electrical resistance test, and the microstructure characteristics were analyzed via SEM. Finally, the electrothermal properties of CGA with different conductive phase materials were studied via heating test and simulated ice-snow melting test. The results showed that the addition of graphene/carbon fiber can significantly improve the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water stability and fatigue performance of CGA. The contact resistance between electrode and specimen can be effectively reduced when the graphite distribution is 600 g/m2. The resistivity of 0.3% carbon fiber + 0.5% graphene rutting plate specimen can reach 4.70 Ω·m. Graphene and carbon fiber in asphalt mortar construct a complete conductive network. The heating efficiency of 0.3% carbon fiber + 0.5% graphene rutting plate specimen is 71.4%, and the ice-snow melting efficiency is 28.73%, demonstrating good electrothermal performance and ice-snow melting effect. In order to systematically study and develop a type of gussasphalt (GA) mix with superior performance, namely GA-10; the effect of Qingchuan Rock Asphalt (QRA) and Trinidad Lake asphalt (TLA) on the GA-10 mix was assessed based on the study of composite natural asphalt modified gussasphalt (CNAMGA) binder. Various analytical tests were used to evaluate the engineering properties, thermal stability and microstructure of CNAMGA mix. The results indicate that the stability of QRA modified binder and TLA modified binder in the normal temperature range and the high temperature range have been improved, and the temperature susceptibility is reduced. The optimal asphalt–aggregate ratio of the GA mix is determined to be 9.7%, which has good high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance and construction workability. The QRA mix has better high-temperature stability than the TLA mix, whereas the low-temperature cracking resistance of the TLA mix is better than that of the QRA mix. The two kinds of GA-10 mix have similar construction workability. The fact that the abundant fine aggregates wrapped in binder fill the coarse aggregates surface contributes to the better adhesion of the GA asphalt concrete. The distribution of aggregate and binder is relatively uniform with fewer pores, and the overall proportion of the binder is greater than that of aggregate. Full article

Epoxy asphalt concrete, mortar asphalt concrete and Gussasphalt concrete are commonly used types of deck pavement materials in bridge deck pavement engineering. However, achieving the high-temperature stability and anti-fatigue performance of the deck pavement materials is still challenging. In order to reduce the rutting and cracking risks of the asphalt mixture, this paper proposed pre-coated aggregates grouting asphalt concrete (PGAC) for bridge deck pavement. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the optimum grouting materials and to evaluate the mechanical performances of the PGAC material. Test results showed that the mechanical properties for PGAC with grouting material of high-viscosity-modified asphalt binder blending with mineral filler were superior to that of GMA-10 used for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge deck pavement. Microstructural analysis showed that the PGAC had a more stable skeleton structure compared to other typical aggregate mixtures. This study highlights the performances of the proposed PGAC and sheds light on the deck pavement material improvement of both high-temperature stability and anti-fatigue performance that could be achieved. This study aims to evaluate the economy of a steel bridge deck pavement scheme (SBDPS) using a comprehensive life-cycle cost (LCC) analysis approach. The SBDPS are divided into the “epoxy asphalt concrete system” (EA system) and “Gussasphalt concrete system” (GA system) according to the difference in the material in the lower layer of the SBDPS. A targeted LCC checklist, including manager cost and user cost was proposed, and a Markov-based approach was applied to establish a life-cycle performance model with clear probability characteristics for SBDPS. Representative traffic conditions were designed using a uniform design method, and the LCC of SBDPS under representative traffic conditions and different credibility (construction quality as a random factor) was compared. The reliability of the LCC analysis approach was verified based on the uncertainty analysis method. Based on an expert-scoring approach, a user cost weight was obtained to ensure it is considered reasonably in the LCC analysis. Compared with the cumulative traffic volume, the cumulative equivalent single axle loads (CESAL) have a closer relationship with the LCC. The GA system has better LCC when the CESAL is less, while the EA system is just the opposite. The breaking point of CESAL for the LCC of the EA system and the GA system is 15 million times. The LCC analysis of SBDPS should consider the influence of random factors such as construction quality. The comprehensive LCC analysis approach in this paper can provide suggestions for bridge-management departments to make a reasonable selection on SBDPS. Full article

Orthotropic steel deck (OSD) is a better choice for urban bridges and the replacement of damaged concrete slabs. Gussasphalt concrete (GAC) is usually adopted as the asphalt surfacing; however, the paving temperature of GAC is high, which will affect the fatigue durability of fatigable welds in OSD. In this study, such influence of high-temperature pavement paving was comprehensively investigated based on in-situ monitoring and numerical analysis. The temperature of OSD and displacement of bearings were investigated based on the monitored data and numerical results. After that, the deformation and residual temperature stress of OSD during the paving process were analyzed. On this basis, the effect of residual temperature stress on fatigue damage accumulation of OSD was investigated and discussed. Results show that the uplift and expanded deformation of OSD arise during the paving process, leading to the displacement of bearings. Residual displacement of bearings, as well as the residual temperature stress at fatigable details of OSD, is observed. The residual temperature stress has considerable effect on fatigue damage accumulation at rib-deck weld. A fatigue damage amplification factor of 1.1 is recommended for taking into consideration of the adverse effect of high-temperature pavement paving. Full article

The crack initiation and life prediction of fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete (FRAC) surfacing for steel bridge decks under a cyclic vehicle load are analyzed from the perspective of damage mechanics. The damage field and the stress and strain field evolution rule of a composite beam in fatigue test are studied, and a fatigue failure criterion is proposed for steel deck FRAC surfacing. Bending fatigue tests are performed on composite beams composed of a steel deck and polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-fiber-reinforced Gussasphalt (GA), i.e., GA-PAN, concrete surfacing under different fiber content and temperature conditions. The damage evolution characteristics of GA-PAN concrete surfacing over the steel deck with different fiber lengths and volume ratios are predicted by analyzing the fatigue life equations. The results show that the steel bridge deck FRAC surfacing model can reflect the comprehensive influence of the fiber content and length on the fatigue performance of steel bridge AC. Specifically, a lower temperature results in the fiber more synergistically affecting the fatigue resistance of AC. Theoretically, the service performance of asphalt concrete increases with the increase of fiber length and content. The optimum fiber length and volume ratio of GA-PAN are found to be 9 mm and 0.46–0.48%, respectively, considering the construction workability. Full article

As bituminous binders greatly influence the engineering performance of gussasphalt concrete for bridge deck pavement, selecting appropriate bitumen is a critical procedure for mixture design. In this study, five different combinations of bituminous binder for potential use in the “Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge” project were prepared and tested. To meet the strict requirements of quality control, a new Guss-Mastic Asphalt (GMA) system was developed. Three key indices, Lueer fluidity, impact toughness, and dynamic stability, were used for GMA design and construction quality control. The test results show that the fluidity of the GMA mixtures was affected by the shear thinning phenomenon. After mixing for three hours, the Lueer value of all GMA mixtures met the requirements of pouring construction. Moreover, it was found that the influence of mixing time on GMA with styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) modified bitumen was different to other prepared mixtures. This difference is ascribed to the degradation of SBS during the blending process at an elevated temperature. Finally, the blended bitumen (30% Pen60/70 + 70% Trinidad lake asphalt (TLA)) was applied to the project of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge. Full article
