The current study investigates the feasibility and performance of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical sensors in geotechnical engineering applications, aiming to demonstrate their broader applicability across different scales, from controlled laboratory experiments to real-world field implementations. More specifically, the research evaluates the sensors’ ability to monitor key parameters—strain, temperature, and acceleration—under diverse loading conditions, including static, dynamic, seismic, and centrifuge loads. Within this framework, laboratory experiments were conducted using the one-degree-of-freedom shaking table at the National Technical University of Athens to assess sensor performance during seismic loading. These tests provided insights into the behavior of geotechnical physical models under earthquake conditions and the reliability of FBG sensors in capturing dynamic responses. Additional testing was performed using the drum centrifuge at ETH Zurich, where physical models experienced gravitational accelerations up to 100 g, including impact loads. The sensors successfully captured the loading conditions, reflecting the anticipated model behavior. In the field, optical fibers were installed on the Perimeter Wall (Circuit Wall) of the Acropolis of Athens to monitor strain, temperature, and acceleration in real-time. Despite the challenges posed by the archaeological site’s constraints, the system gathered data over two years, offering insights into the structural behavior of this historic monument under environmental and loading variations. The Acropolis application serves as a key field example, illustrating the use of these sensors in a complex and historically significant site. Finally, the study details the test setups, sensor types, and data acquisition techniques, while addressing technical challenges and solutions. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of FBG sensors in geotechnical applications and highlight their potential for future projects, emphasizing their value as tools for monitoring structural integrity and advancing geotechnical engineering. In order to ensure that a perimeter security system can work effectively, a convenient and effective event detection algorithm has an important engineering significance. Given the above background, in this paper, we propose a high reliability intrusion event recognition method and vibration sensing system, based on ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating array, by using high dimensional random matrix. We obtain a high sensitivity optical interference signal by constructing a patch-matched optical interference system, then compose the demodulated interference signal into a high-dimensional random matrix. The statistical characteristics of the matrix for the Marcenko-Pastur (M-P) law and ring law are used to confirm the presence of intrusion events efficiently, which can reflect the limit spectrum distribution of the high-dimensional random matrix; meanwhile, the abnormal state quantity and moment are obtained. Further, the average spectral radius value is used to judge the fault cause. Field experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively obtain the correct monitoring data for the sensor array. By comparing the monitoring results of normal operation and crusher operation, we can detect the intrusion event in 4.5 s, and the accuracy rate can reach more than 90%, which verifies that the proposed high-dimensional random matrix analysis method can work properly, proving a practical engineering application prospect. An intrusion behavior recognition method based on deep learning is proposed in this paper in order to improve the recognition accuracy of raster perimeter intrusion behavior. The Mach–Zehnder fiber optic interferometer was used to collect the external vibration signal sensing unit, capture the external vibration signal, use the cross-correlation characteristic method to obtain the minimum frame length of the fiber vibration signal, and preprocess the intrusion signal according to the signal strength. The intrusion signals were superimposed and several sections of signals were intercepted by fixed window length; the spectrum information is obtained by Fourier transform of the intercepted stationary signals. The convolution neural network was introduced into the pattern recognition of the intrusion signals in the optical fiber perimeter defense zone, and the different characteristics of the intrusion signals were extracted, so as to realize the accurate identification of different intrusion signals. Experimental results showed that this method was highly sensitive to intrusion events, could effectively reduce the false alarm rate of intrusion signals, and could improve the accuracy and efficiency of intrusion signal recognition. On-line fabricated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array and its sensing potentials have attracted plenty of attention in recent years. In this paper, FBG arrays are written on-line on a two-mode fiber, and this two-mode fiber Bragg grating (TM-FBG) is further experimentally investigated for temperature and curvature sensing. The responses of this sensor were characterized by 11.2 pm/°C and −0.21 dB/m−1 for temperature and curvature, respectively. Based on the measurements, a dual-parameter fiber sensing system was developed, which can realize the quasi-distributed, simultaneous detection of temperature and curvature, making it suitable for structural health monitoring or perimeter security. We demonstrate the ability of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) sensors to protect large areas from unauthorized activities in railway scenarios such as stations or tunnels. We report on the technological strategy adopted to protect a specific depot, representative of a common scenario for security applications in the railway environment. One of the concerns in the protection of a railway area centers on the presence of rail-tracks, which cannot be obstructed with physical barriers. We propose an integrated optical fiber system composed of FBG strain sensors that can detect human intrusion for protection of the perimeter combined with FBG accelerometer sensors for protection of rail-track access. Several trials were carried out in indoor and outdoor environments. The results demonstrate that FBG strain sensors bonded under a ribbed rubber mat enable the detection of intruder break-in via the pressure induced on the mat, whereas the FBG accelerometers installed under the rails enable the detection of intruders walking close to the railroad tracks via the acoustic surface waves generated by footsteps. Based on a single enabling technology, this integrated system represents a valuable intrusion detection system for railway security and could be integrated with other sensing functionalities in the railway field using fiber optic technology.
