In this study, the fundamentals of electroencephalography signals, their categorization into frequency sub-bands, the circuitry used for their acquisition, and the impact of noise interference on signal acquisition are examined. Additionally, design specifications for medical-grade and research-grade EEG circuits and a comprehensive analysis of various analog front-end architectures for electroencephalograph (EEG) circuit design are presented. Three distinct selected case studies are examined in terms of comparative evaluation with generic EEG circuit design templates. Moreover, a novel one-channel battery-supplied EEG analog front-end circuit designed to address the requirements of usage protocols containing strong compound muscle movements is introduced. Furthermore, a realistic input signal generator circuit is proposed that models the human body and the electromagnetic interference from its surroundings. Experimental simulations are conducted in 50 Hz and 60 Hz electrical grid environments to evaluate the performance of the novel design. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed system, particularly in terms of bandwidth, portability, Common Mode Rejection Ratio, gain, suppression of muscle movement artifacts, electrostatic discharge and leakage current protection. Conclusively, the novel design is cost-effective and suitable for both commercial and research single-channel EEG applications. It can be easily incorporated in Brain–Computer Interfaces and neurofeedback training systems. Full article

We are currently investigating the ultrasound imaging of a sensor that consists of a randomized encoding mask attached to a single lead zirconate titanate (PZT) oscillator for a puncture microscope application. The proposed model was conducted using a finite element method (FEM) simulator. To increase the number of measurements required by a single element system that affects its resolution, the transducer was rotated at different angles. The image was constructed by solving a linear equation of the image model resulting in a poor quality. In a previous work, the phase information was extracted from the echo signal to improve the image quality. This study proposes a strategy by integrating the weighted frequency subbands compound and a super-resolution technique to enhance the resolution in range and lateral direction. The image performance with different methods was also evaluated using the experimental data. The results indicate that better image resolution and speckle suppression were obtained by applying the proposed method. Full article

Optimal demodulation band extraction is a significant step in rolling bearing fault analysis. However, existing methods, primarily based on global indexes and neglecting negative local outliers, cannot identify compound faults in intense noise environments. To address this problem, a novel demodulation band extraction method based on weighted geometric cyclic relative entropy (WGCRE) is proposed. WGCRE is defined on the cyclic sub-bands model of the logarithmic envelope spectrum (LES) to fully consider the bearing characteristic frequency of pseudo-cyclostationarity. In detail, local and global thresholds are separately set by the white noise parameter and harmonic-to-noise ratio to exclude the exogenous noise outliers. On this basis, the WGCRE is defined as a geometrically weighted index of several different fault types to avoid harmonic interference and improve the identification of composite faults. WGCRE–gram, similar to fast kurtogram (FK), is then constructed by replacing kurtosis with WGCRE to extract the optimal demodulation band. Compared with FK and another LES-based method, logarithmic-cycligram, the proposed method is more robust for accurately identifying single and compound faults under external noise. The effectiveness of this method is verified through simulations and actual tests. Simulation experiments of different kinds and intensities of exogenous noise interference preliminarily determine the superior robustness of WGCRE in the face of solid noise. The inner ring, outer ring, and composite fault experiments further confirmed the robust adaptability of WGCRE in the face of complex working conditions. Full article

A wheelset bearing is one of the main components of the train bogie frame. The early fault detection of the wheelset bearing is quite important to ensure the safety of the train. Among numerous diagnostic methods, envelope analysis is one of the most effective approaches in the detection of bearing faults which has been amply applied, but its validity greatly depends on the informative frequency band (IFB) determined. For the wheelset bearing faulty signal, it is often difficult to identify the IFB and extract fault characteristics due to the influence of complex operating conditions. To address this problem, a novel method to select optimal IFB, called the Mkurtogram, is proposed for railway wheelset bearings fault diagnosis. It takes the multipoint kurtosis (Mkurt) of unbiased autocorrelation (AC) of the squared envelope signal generated from sub-bands as assessment indicator for the first time. The fundamental concept which inspires this proposed method is to make full use of regular periodicity of AC of squared envelope signal. In the AC domain, the impulsiveness and periodicity, two distinctive signatures of the repetitive transients, have achieved a united representation by Mkurt. A simulated signal with multiple interferences and two experimental signals collected from wheelset bearings are applied to verify its performances and advantages. The results indicate that the proposed method is more effective to extract the wheelset bearings fault feature under complex interferences. It can not only decrease the influence of large impulse interference and the discrete harmonics interference, but also effectively overcome the influence of amplitude fluctuation caused by variable working conditions. Moreover, based on the periodic directivity of Mkurt, the proposed method also can be applied to the compound faults diagnosis of the wheelset bearing. Full article

Dual-tree complex wavelet transform has been successfully applied to the composite diagnosis of a gearbox and has achieved good results. However, it has some fatal weaknesses, so this paper proposes an improved dual-tree complex wavelet transform (IDTCWT), and combines minimum entropy deconvolution (MED) to diagnose the composite fault of a gearbox. Firstly, the number of decomposition levels and the effective sub-bands of the DTCWT are adaptively determined according to the correlation coefficient matrix. Secondly, frequency mixing is removed by notch filter. Thirdly, each of the obtained sub-bands further reduces the noise by minimum entropy deconvolution. Then, the proposed method and the existing adaptive noise reduction methods, such as empirical mode decomposition (EMD), ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), and variational mode decomposition (VMD), are used to decompose the two sets of simulation signals in comparison, and the feasibility of the proposed method has been verified. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the compound fault vibration signal of a gearbox. The results show the proposed method successfully extracts the outer ring fault at a frequency of 160 Hz, the gearbox fault with a characteristic frequency of 360 Hz and its double frequency of 720 Hz, and that there is no mode mixing. The method proposed in this paper provides a new idea for the feature extraction of a gearbox compound fault. Full article
