To address severe strata pressure induced by large end-area hanging spans and poor caving of thick, hard roofs in western coal mines, this study takes the 1302 working face of Zhujiamao Coal Mine as a case study. A multiscale mechanical model is developed to describe the progressive evolution of a stratified hard roof from a continuous beam to a cantilever beam and finally to an arched triangular hanging roof. Limit criteria for the maximum hanging length under bending and shear failure are derived, indicating that bending governs end-area roof instability. The theoretical results show good agreement with field observations and numerical simulations, providing guidance for liquid nitrogen fracturing target selection. Coupled FLAC3D-3DEC simulations reveal the staged deformation of overlying strata and clarify the spatial correspondence between the “O-X” fracture pattern and the arched triangular hanging roof. Based on these findings, a collaborative weakening strategy integrating directional drilling, hydraulic pre-cracking, and deep liquid nitrogen fracturing is proposed. Field observations and comparative tests confirm that this method effectively forms a three-dimensional fracture network, reduces roof stiffness and strength, shortens the caving interval, lowers peak shield resistance, and promotes stable caving of the end-area hanging roof. During the mining process of fully-mechanized caving faces, the roof of the roadway behind the working face easily forms an arched-shape hanging roof structure with the working face pushed forward, which results in potential hazards such as gas accumulation and large-scale roof collapse. Based on the actual situation of a hanging roof at a difficult caving end in fully-mechanized top coal caving faces, through borehole exploration, surrounding rock displacement observation, bolt stress monitoring, theoretical formula calculation, and numerical simulation methods, the structure characteristics of the hanging roof at the end of the fully-mechanized caving face are studied. The ultimate failure depth and ultimate break distance of the hanging roof structure at the end of the working face are obtained, and its formation mechanism is analyzed. It is concluded that the hanging structure is formed by the following reasons: the lithology of sandy mudstone and fine sandstone above the top coal of the roadway is strong; the hanging roof structure is less affected by working-face mining; there is a result of insufficient rotary pressure of the upper mudstone while working together with the protective coal pillar and end support the caving step distance of the curved hanging roof structure is 10~13.55 m. To study the soft roof failure mechanism and the supporting method for a gateway in a gently inclined coal seam with a dip angle of 16° kept for gob-side entry retaining, and through the methodology of field investigation and numerical and analytical modeling, this paper analyzed the stress evolution law of roof strata at the working face end and determined that the sharp horizontal stress unloading phenomenon along the coal wall side did not appear after the working face advanced. Conversely, the horizontal stress along the gob side instantly decreased and the tensile stress produced, and the vertical stress in the central part of the roof had a higher reduction magnitude as well. An in-depth study indicates that the soft roof of the working face end subsided and seriously separated due to the effect of the front abutment pressure and the roof hanging length above the gob line, as well as certain other factors, including the rapid unloading of the lateral stress, tension and shear on the lower roof rock layer and dynamic disturbance. Those influencing factors also led to rapid crack propagation on a large scale and serious fracturing in the soft roof of the working face end. However, in the gob stress stabilized zone, the soft roof in the gob-side entry retaining has a shearing failure along the filling wall inside affected by the overburden pressure, rock bulking pressure, and roof gravity. To maintain the roof integrity, decrease the roof deformation, and enable the control of the working face end soft roof and the stabilization of the gob-side entry retaining roof, this study suggests that the preferred bolt installation angle for the soft roof situation is 70° based on the rock bolt extrusion strengthening theory.
