Designing and improving collection systems for dust and toxic pollutants is crucial for improving the safety and indoor air quality of laboratory buildings. Push–pull ventilation systems with uniformly distributed parallel airflow have been proven to be of great help in this task. Designing exhaust hoods with parallel airflow distribution can effectively enhance the airflow uniformity of push–pull ventilation systems, especially when combining it with the implementation of rectifying orifice plates on the exhaust hoods. Therefore, this study combines a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and experimental approach to analyze the influence of key factors that lead to improvements in the airflow uniformity through the use of rectifying orifice plates, namely the aperture and porosity, as well as the number of rectifying orifice plates on the airflow uniformity of exhaust hoods. The study shows the following: (1) The aperture of the rectifying orifice plate considerably affects the airflow uniformity of the exhaust hood. Specifically, near the exhaust hood outlet, the airflow uniformity is negatively correlated with the aperture; conversely, near the exhaust hood inlet, the airflow uniformity is positively correlated with the aperture. (2) A rectifying orifice plate with a porosity of 35.43% can effectively improve the airflow uniformity of the exhaust hood. (3) Exhaust hoods with a double-layer rectifying orifice plate structure can improve airflow uniformity by approximately 40% compared to those with a single-layer structure. The above research results can guide the optimization of exhaust hood design to improve airflow uniformity, thereby effectively enhancing the capture efficiency of the push–pull ventilation system for dust and toxic pollutants and providing a safer environment for experimenters in laboratory buildings. Due to the advantages of a short cycle, low investment and low energy consumption per ton of steel, short-process electric furnace steelmaking is about to welcome a golden period of rapid development in China. During the operation of the electric furnace, a large amount of smoke and dust is generated. Most studies focus on organized emissions, and the impact of unorganized emissions in workshops on the environment cannot be ignored. This paper evaluates the thermal environment in the electric furnace steelmaking workshop based on the analytic hierarchy process and obtains the influence weight of the fugitive emission location. The mass concentration of dust at each measuring point increased by 1.17 mg/m3 on average, and the concentration of unorganized emission dust near the outlet was 23.572 mg/m3. The numerical simulation calculation model is established by the CFD method, a fixed initial jet velocity is set, the initial velocity of the ladle soot plume is changed, and the inclination angle, arrangement height and dust removal air volume of the dust hood are respectively adjusted in different tapping periods. The impact of simulation on the efficiency of dust collection for different dust removal hood configurations was investigated, considering variations in inclination angle, arrangement height and dust removal airflow. The optimal structural parameters for the dust removal hood were determined to be an inclination angle of 60° and an arrangement height of 2.4 m, and an optimal dust removal airflow was determined to be 110,000 m3/h. This study provides a theoretical foundation for engineering practice. Full article

The metallurgical industry is in second place among all other industries in terms of emissions into the atmosphere, and air pollution is the main cause of environmental problems arising from the activities of metallurgical enterprises. In some existing systems for localization, in the trapping and removal of dust emissions from tapholes and cast-iron gutters of foundries, air flow parameters may differ from the optimal ones for solving aspiration problems. The largest emissions are observed in the area of the taphole (40–60%) and from the ladles during their filling (35–50%). In this paper, it is proposed to consider a variant of the blast furnace aspiration system with the simultaneous supply of a dust–gas–air mixture from two-side smoke exhausters and two upper hoods with two simultaneously operating tapholes, that is, when the blast furnace operates in the maximum emissions mode. This article proposes an assessment of the effectiveness of the modernized blast furnace aspiration system using computer CFD modeling, where its main parameters are given. It is shown that the efficiency of dust collection in the proposed system is more than 90%, and the speed of the gas–dust mixture is no lower than 20 m/s, which prevents gravitational settling on the walls. The distribution fields of temperatures and velocities are obtained for further engineering analysis and the possible improvement of aspiration systems. Full article

High rate of dust generation and serious dust diffusion in dry directional drilling in soft and broken coal seams (SBCS) have long been critical problems in the mining process. To solve these problems, in this study, a dust hood was designed and applied to realize non-contact dust control in drilling holes. The optimal performance of the dust hood was achieved when different technical parameters, including the gap width between the dust hood and the drill pipe, the air-slot width of the sealing device, the slag discharge pressure, and the air curtain pressure were controlled at 2 mm, 0.2 mm, 0.3 MPa, and 0.5 MPa, respectively. As a result, the dust concentration was reduced from 540 mg/m3 to 15 mg/m3, with dust control efficiency reaching 97.2%. The in situ test results confirmed good dust control effects, as the dust control efficiency reached 98.3% after using the dust hood. Full article

A parallel-flow exhaust hood is an effective ventilation device to control dust and toxic pollutants and protect the occupational health of workers, whether it is used alone or combined with a uniform air supply hood in a push–pull ventilation system. Some scholars have studied the outside air flow characteristics of the conventional exhaust hood with non-uniform air speed at the hood face, but the law of velocity variation outside the parallel-flow exhaust hood is not clear at present. Therefore, this paper uses the dimensionless method to study the center-line velocity change regime in a parallel-flow square exhaust hood based on simulation and experimental data. The results show that the dimensionless center-line velocity has a good change law with the characteristic length of exhaust hood in a parallel-flow square exhaust hood, which can eliminate the influence of hood face velocity and the hood size on the velocity change regime; and the experimental data is basically consistent with the calculated data, which shows that the regression equation method is reliable. Air pollution by wood dust in furniture production sites is an important hygiene issue. The dust is created by all types of wood and wood-based material machining, and its concentration in the working zone surrounding the machining stand depends on the effectiveness of the dust exhaust system. In present research, three setups of the dust extraction system for a conventional table sawing machine are considered while machining particleboards. The results showed a high impact of the exhaust system connection setup on the dust concentration in the air surrounding the sawing machine work stand. The use of both main and auxiliary sawdust extraction connectors together ensured the highest clearness of the air, with only 0.5 mg/m3 of dust concentration. Closing the upper hood leads to a concentration five times higher, while disconnecting it results in a ten times higher dust content. The finest dust particles (<1 µm), however, are the most numerous in the case of closing the hood. Full article
