Background: Ultimate Frisbee (UF) is an intermittent team sport with distinct positional roles (cutters and handlers), yet evidence integrating anthropometric, body composition, and physical performance profiles by playing position remains limited. This study aimed to examine positional differences in these variables among male UF players. Methods: Forty male players (age: 25.13 ± 3.76 years; 7.0 ± 2.5 years of training experience) participated in this cross-sectional design, including 20 cutters and 20 handlers. Anthropometry, body composition, and dynamic balance variables were analyzed using independent-samples t-tests or Mann–Whitney U tests, as appropriate. Positional differences in somatotype and physical performance were analyzed using a one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Results: No positional differences were observed in general anthropometric variables (p > 0.05). However, handlers exhibited higher body fat percentage (14.32 ± 2.37 vs. 11.95 ± 2.45; p = 0.028), fat mass (11.08 ± 2.51 vs. 8.95 ± 2.67 kg; p = 0.049), and endomorphy (4.15 ± 1.22 vs. 2.99 ± 1.30; p = 0.002) than cutters. In contrast, cutters demonstrated higher speed (20 m sprint: 3.11 ± 0.17 vs. 3.21 ± 0.15 s; p < 0.05), agility (10.16 ± 0.69 vs. 10.69 ± 0.61 s; p < 0.05), and vertical jump performance (Counter Movement Jump: 40.93 ± 6.54 vs. 36.38 ± 4.71 cm; p < 0.05; Abalakov: 46.39 ± 7.88 vs. 40.20 ± 4.68 cm; p < 0.01). No differences were found in intermittent endurance (Yo-Yo Intermitent Recovery Test1): 982 ± 354 vs. 940 ± 348 m), upper-limb power, or dynamic balance. Conclusions: These findings indicate that playing position in UF is characterized by distinct body composition and lower-limb neuromuscular performance profiles, whereas intermittent endurance, upper-limb power, and balance represent shared physical requirements across positions. Background: This study aimed, in U11 male football players, (i) to investigate the effects of an 8-week running-based HIIT or SSGs program on aerobic fitness, neuromuscular performance and internal load, and (ii) to compare training-induced changes in performance variables between training modalities. Methods: Sixteen U11 football players were randomly assigned to either the SSGs group (4 vs. 4 format, 5 × 3 min with 1 min of rest between bouts) or the HIIT group (5 × 3 min of 15 s running at 100% peak velocity (Vpeak) alternating with 15 s of recovery, and 1 min of rest between sets). The intervention period lasted 8 weeks. Aerobic fitness (Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level 1 Children’s Test, YYIR1C), sprint time performance (10 m and 20 m sprints tests) and change-of-direction (COD) ability (Arrowhead Agility Test) were assessed before and after the intervention. Heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were assessed as indices of internal load. Results: Both SSGs and running-based HIIT produced comparable improvements in YYIR1C distance, Vpeak (p < 0.05), with no significant change in the between-group difference. Neuromuscular gains occurred only after SSGs (p < 0.05), with similar 10 m sprint improvements between groups but superior 20 m gains for SSGs (p < 0.01). COD ability improved in both groups (p < 0.05), with broader enhancements following SSGs (p < 0.05). Finally, running-based HIIT elicited greater HRpeak and higher RPE than SSGs (p < 0.05) across most intervention weeks. Conclusions: In U11 male football players, both SSGs and running-based HIIT effectively improved aerobic fitness and COD performance. However, SSGs may offer additional benefits for sprint development with lower perceived psychological stress. Full article

Objectives: The physical and physiological characteristics of padel players are essential for appropriate training load prescription; however, this area remains underexplored. Therefore, this hypothesis-driven study aimed to analyse physical and physiological differences in male padel players according to playing side. A secondary objective was to observe the influence of training volume on these parameters. Methods: Fourteen high-level male players competing in professional circuits or top-level regional competitions participated in this cross-sectional study using directional (one-tailed) testing. Results: Vertical jump performance differed significantly between the countermovement jump (CMJ) and the Abalakov jump (ABK) (p < 0.001), with lower values in the CMJ (40.98 cm) compared with the ABK (46.96 cm). Isometric handgrip strength showed significant inter-limb differences (p < 0.001), with greater force in the dominant hand (49.08 kg) than in the non-dominant hand (44.22 kg). Mean completion time in the agility t-test was 10.40 s (95% CI: 10.06–10.74 s). The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test showed a mean distance of 404.28 m, corresponding to an estimated VO2max of 50.79 mL·kg−1·min−1. Playing side significantly affected Yo-Yo performance and estimated VO2max (p = 0.036), with higher values in left-side players. Although no significant differences were found in handgrip strength according to playing side. As expected, weekly training frequency did not significantly influence any variable. Conclusions: These findings help characterise the physical and physiological profile of high-level padel players and provide practical reference values to support training prescription and performance monitoring. Despite the prevalence of the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Tests Level 1 (YYIRTL1) and Level 2 (YYIRTL2) in elite soccer, knowledge surrounding their association and prediction of match performance is limited. This study investigated the association between respective tests and match running performance in male professional soccer players. High-intensity (HIR), high-speed (HSR), and sprinting (SPR) running distances were collected using a global positioning system from eleven professional male players who completed the YYIRTL1 and YYIRTL2. Associations between match performance and the YYIRT were assessed using correlational analyses, and the predictability of the YYIRT with match performance was assessed using univariate linear regression analyses. Strong correlations were found between YYIRTL1 and both HIR (r = 0.79) and HSR (r = 0.73). A moderate correlation was observed between YYIRTL2 and HIR (r = 0.42) and a weak correlation was observed between YYIRTL2 and HSR (r = 0.12). No correlation was observed between YYIRTL1 and SPR (r = 0.07) and a moderate, negative correlation was observed between YYIRTL2 and SPR (r = −0.21). Univariate regression analyses suggested that YYIRTL1 explained 63% of HIR variance, which YYIRTl2 did not, and that neither test suggested significant predictive ability in HSR or SPR. The YYIRTL1 is strongly associated with, and may predict, in-game HIR in Canadian male professional soccer players. Full article

Background: Neurofeedback training has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing performance by targeting specific brain activity patterns linked to motor skills, decision-making, and concentration. This study aimed to explore the associations between neurofeedback outcomes and football-specific performance metrics, including anthropometric, physical, technical, and tactical dimensions. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used to examine the effects of a six-week neurofeedback training program on motor skills, tactical decision-making, and physical performance in young women’s football players (n = 8, aged 14–18). Participants underwent 30-min sessions three times a week targeting sensorimotor rhythms (SMRs) in the 12–15 Hz range within virtual football scenarios. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included anthropometric measures, neurophysiological evaluations, Loughborough Soccer Shooting Test (LSST), and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (YYIR1). Tactical decision-making was evaluated with a FUT-SAT-based instrument, and biological maturity was estimated using the Mirwald equations. Results: Statistical analyses using Pearson’s correlations revealed significant associations between neurofeedback outcomes, motor efficiency indices (MEIs), decision-making (DM), and football performance metrics. Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.504 to 0.998, with p-values from 0.010 to <0.001, indicating significant associations across physical, technical, and tactical dimensions. Conclusions: This study highlights the beneficial impact of neurofeedback on football performance in young female athletes. Full article

Objectives: This study assessed the influence of oral and topical sodium bicarbonate (SB) on recovery and soccer-specific performance after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Methods: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group design, 24 soccer players were allocated to oral SB, topical SB (PR Lotion, Momentous), or placebo (PLA) (n = 8 per condition) and attended six laboratory sessions: (i) familiarization, (ii) baseline measures, and (iii) four experimental trials on consecutive days. Muscle damage was induced on day 1 using 40 × 15 m sprints, after which either 0.3 g·kg−1 body mass (BM) SB (SB-ORAL), 0.9036 g·kg−1 BM PR Lotion (SB-LOTION), or an equivalent PLA was given. Recovery outcomes were measured post-EIMD, 1 d, 2 d, and 3 d post (day 1–4). Soccer-specific performance was repeated 3 d post, with supplements administered again 2 h pre-exercise. Recovery measures included muscle soreness, vertical jump height, and maximal voluntary isometric contraction. Illinois agility test (IAT), 8 × 25 m repeated sprints, and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 2 (Yo-Yo IR2) were assessed as soccer-specific performance. Results: Neither SB-ORAL nor SB-LOTION accelerated indices of recovery but decline in soccer-specific performance from baseline to 3 d post was attenuated for SB-ORAL, with significant effects for IAT (p = 0.032, g = 1.69) and Yo-Yo IR2 (p = 0.026, g = 1.61) compared with PLA. Conclusions: SB did not accelerate recovery following EIMD but prescribing oral SB before subsequent exercise might rescue key performance indicators. These findings offer implications for practitioners working with soccer players during periods where full recovery is not achieved. Full article

Background: The off-season is often characterized by a significant decrease or even a complete cessation of training. If this reduction is not planned properly, it can result in detraining. Despite numerous studies examining the effects of HIIT in football players, its specific role in mitigating detraining and maintaining aerobic and anaerobic performance during the off-season in adolescent female football players remains underexplored. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of a 4-week off-season high-intensity training (HIIT) program on aerobic performance level and sprint endurance ability in Under-15 (U-15) female football players. Methods: Fifteen U-15 female football players from a professional club completed an experimental protocol consisting of two HIIT formats: Small-Sided Games (SSGs) and Repeated Sprint Training (RST), each performed twice weekly. Before and after the intervention period, participants performed the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level 1 (YYIR1) test to gauge aerobic performance and the 30-seconds sprint test to assess sprint endurance. The internal training load was monitored via heart rate (HR) and blood lactate concentration ([La]+), while external training load metrics included the total distance (TD), moderate-speed distance (MSD), high-speed distance (HSD), acceleration distance (≥3 m·s−2; ACC), and deceleration distance (≤−3 m·s−2; DEC). Results: YYIR1 improved by 57% (p = 0.0001; d = 1.12; 95% CI: 121.94–224.71) and the 30-s test performance increased by 13% (p = 0.004; d = 0.91; and 95% CI: 14.46–25.53) following the intervention period. A very large correlation between time spent at 90–95% HRmax and the 30-s test (r = 0.90, p = 0.0001) and YYIR1 (r = 0.81, p = 0.0001) performance was observed. Very large and nearly perfect correlations between DHS and YYIR1 (r = 0.82, p = 0.0001) and the 30-s test performance (r = 0.94, p = 0.0001), respectively, were found. Conclusions: In U-15 female football players, a four-week off-season HIIT program improved both aerobic performance and sprint endurance ability, indicating that a HIIT regime attenuates the off-season detraining, thus supporting a better-conditioned return to play. Coaches may implement 4-week high-intensity off-season programs to enhance aerobic performance and start the pre-season with a satisfactory level of aerobic fitness and sprint endurance. Full article

Background: In recent years, interest in probiotic supplementation has increased among athletes due to its potential benefits on sports performance. Thus, the aim of this trial was to investigate Lactobacillus plantarum’s effects on sports performance, intestinal damage, and oxidative stress biomarkers. Methods: Twenty-two physically active participants, nine females and thirteen males (age: 32.8 ± 5.2 years; height: 1.73 ± 0.1 m (meters); body mass: 72.2 ± 10.3 kg (kilograms) volunteered in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel study. The participants performed a strenuous exercise session, and immediately after, their perceived exertion was assessed and blood samples were drawn to assess intestinal damage (IFABP: intestinal fatty acid binding protein) and oxidative stress (PC: protein carbonyls; TAC: total antioxidant capacity; total proteins; GSSG: glutathione disulfide; GSH: reduced glutathione and catalase). Twenty-four hours later, the participants ranked their recovery status and completed various sports performance tests: CMJ (countermovement jump), RAST (running-based anaerobic sprint), and YOYO IR1 (YOYO intermittent recovery test level 1). This was followed by a four-week supplementation period, in which the participants ingested one probiotic capsule per day containing 10 billion CFU (colony forming units) of Lactobacillus plantarum or a placebo capsule (dextrose). Results: The paired samples t-test revealed a significantly better result in the YOYO IR1 test in the probiotic group, while a significant reduction was observed in the TAC levels in the placebo group. Conclusions: The results suggest that Lactobacillus plantarum supplementation could increase YOYO IR1 sports performance test scores and may mitigate TAC value reduction. Full article

Background: Many athletes experience sleep difficulties, and prior research within this cohort suggests that acute supplementation of alpha-lactalbumin (ALAC), a whey protein rich in the amino acid tryptophan, may improve sleep and performance. Therefore, this study investigated whether sub-chronic ALAC supplementation in the evening would improve sleep and physical performance within a poor-sleeping athletic population. Methods: In total, 24 athletically trained participants with sleep difficulties (Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire: 8.6 ± 2.2; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index: 10.0 ± 3.0) completed this double-blinded, randomised controlled, crossover trial. The participants were supplemented with 40 g of ALAC or control 2 h pre-sleep for seven consecutive nights within habitual settings, with sleep measured via actigraphy. Performance was assessed following the 1-week supplementation period, with the 30 s countermovement jump test, Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1, and reaction time testing performed in a standardised sequence under controlled conditions. Results: During the ALAC condition, the objective number of awakenings increased (CON: 10.25 ± 5.28, ALAC: 11.01 ± 5.79; p = 0.031), the average jump height reduced (CON: 28.58 ± 5.53 cm, ALAC: 27.68 ± 5.14 cm; p = 0.037), the subjective physical and mental performance capabilities declined in the evening (p < 0.001), and evening negative emotional states (p = 0.001) were reduced. Conclusions: Seven days of ALAC supplementation may not improve the sleep and physical performance of an athletically trained population with mild–moderate sleep difficulties. Future research should recruit populations with more severe sleep difficulties and measure sleep architecture over an extended period to fully ascertain the effects, and potential benefits, of ALAC supplementation for athletes. Background: Body composition plays a key role in both anaerobic and aerobic performance in professional soccer. However, its relationship with physical performance in female players remains underexplored. Assessing these parameters at the beginning of the pre-season provides valuable insights for optimizing player readiness. This study investigates the correlation between anthropometric profile, body composition, and physical performance in professional female soccer players at pre-season onset. Additionally, it analyzes positional differences and their relation to the specific physical demands of women’s soccer. Methods: A cross-sectional study of thirty-four female soccer players (age: 23.06 ± 4.29 years, height: 164.15 ± 5.84 cm, weight: 58.39 ± 6.62 kg, and ∑6 skinfolds: 74.57 ± 18.48 mm) who performed anthropometric measurements, the Countermovement Jump (CMJ), Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT), and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1) on the first day of the pre-season. One-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc test assessed positional differences, while Pearson’s or Spearman’s correlation coefficients evaluated relationships between anthropometric variables and performance outcomes. Results: Very high positive correlations were found between body and muscle mass with the power variables in CMJ and WAnT (r = 0.70–0.89; p < 0.001). An almost perfect correlation was observed between body mass and peak power in WAnT (r = 0.904; p < 0.001). In contrast, fat mass showed moderate negative correlations with jump height and aerobic performance (Yo-Yo IR1 distance) (r = 0.30–0.49; p < 0.04). Significant differences were observed in the mean (757.60 ± 95.59 W) and peak power (773.59 ± 101.88 W) of CMJ pre-WAnT, with goalkeepers showing higher values compared to defenders and midfielders (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Body composition significantly influences athletic performance, showing positive correlations of muscle and body mass with anaerobic power and capacity. Background/Objectives: Physical fitness in youth soccer impacts individual and team performance through the specific demands that must be met on the field. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize and identify youth soccer players with regard to the roles they play on the field. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed to characterize and identify the physical fitness levels of youth soccer players using previously validated measurement tests. A total of 36 players were evaluated (15 defenders and 24 attackers) using various physical fitness tests: Squat Jump (SJ), Countermovement Jump (CMJ), Single-leg Countermovement Jumps (SLCMJs), COD-Timer 5-0-5, Speed (5, 10, 15, and 20 m), Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level I (YYIR1), and Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST). The data were confirmed using the Shapiro–Wilk test. Effect sizes were obtained using the Rank-Biserial coefficient, and, to identify the profiles of attackers and defenders, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed. Results: For the strength variables, attackers obtained better results than defenders in the variable flight time in the SJ (p = 0.03; R-b = −0.33) and contact time (%) in the SLCMJ test (p = 0.04; R-b = −0.33). Meanwhile, defenders achieved better results than attackers in the SLCMJ test for the variable flight time (%) (p = 0.01; R-b = 0.33) and breaking angle (A°) in the Nordic Hamstring (p = 0.01; R-b = 0.33). The results showed differences according to the players’ roles. Three principal components were identified for both attackers and defenders. The PC1 for attackers considered variables of strength, asymmetry, change of direction, and power. PC2 only considered strength and power variables. PC3 considered variables of strength, speed, endurance, and power. For defenders, PC1 considered strength, asymmetry, and power. PC2 analyzed variables of strength, asymmetry, change of direction and power. Finally, PC3 only grouped speed variables. Conclusions: Although youth soccer positions involve offensive and defensive roles, this study reveals differences in certain physical fitness variables. Therefore, it is necessary to tailor training tasks according to the specificity of the playing position, in line with the systems of play used and the predominance of the role that players occupy, whether in defense or attack. This study examines the subjective attributes that coaches consider most important for identifying and developing the talent of junior élite football players. It also explores whether players’ physical fitness efficiency moderates these attributes and influences playing time during the regular season. Forty-three junior élite football players and four Italian Serie A club coaches participated in the study, contributing their unique perspectives and experiences. Players’ physical fitness was assessed using the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level 1 test, while coaches rated players’ abilities through a structured questionnaire. A significant positive relationship was found between ’understanding of the game and position on the field’ and total playing time (t = 3.498, p < 0.01, β = 0.953). Physical efficiency further strengthened this relationship when players’ fitness levels were average (b = 0.624, p < 0.001) and one standard deviation above the mean (b = 0.891, p < 0.001). These findings highlight the importance of tactical awareness in earning playing time and suggest that physical fitness enhances the effect of cognitive abilities on performance. This study provides insights into how coaches assess talent and underscores the value of integrating physical and tactical development in youth football, providing a testament to the power of collaboration in advancing our understanding of talent identification in sports. This study examines the relationship between inspiratory muscle performance (IMP) using the Test of Incremental Respiratory Endurance (TIRE), knee extension (EXT) and flexion (FLEX) acceleration (ACCEL) and deceleration (DECEL) times on an isokinetic dynamometer (ID), and performance of the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (YYIRT1) among thirteen Division I collegiate women soccer players (D1CWSP). Knee EXT and FLEX were tested at three velocities (60°/s, 180°/s, and 300°/s) using ID, while IMP was measured using maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and sustained maximal inspiratory pressure (SMIP). Significant negative correlations were found between MIP and the ACCEL time of FLEX at 60°/s and 300°/s, as well as between MIP and the DECEL time of EXT at 180°/s. Additionally, SMIP was negatively correlated with ACCEL times of FLEX at 180°/s and 300°/s and with DECEL times for both EXT and FLEX at 300°/s. These results suggest that greater IMP is linked to faster ACCEL and DECEL times in knee EXT and FLEX, indicating a role of IMP in enhancing muscle recruitment and performance. The only significant correlation with the YYIRT1 performance was observed between the YYIRT accumulated distance and the ACCEL time of FLEX at 180°/s. These findings highlight a physiological mechanism whereby IMP may contribute to improved dynamic muscle performance, though further research is needed to explore its implications for overall athletic performance. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of caffeinated chewing gum on the physical performance of elite ice hockey players after a jet lag intervention. Fourteen national-level (age: 25.2 ± 5.4; height: 176.5 ± 5.3; weight: 78.1 ± 13.4) ice hockey players were tested late at night after a full day awake schedule with jet lag. A randomised, double-blind experimental design was employed in which participants either chewed caffeinated gum (CAF) containing 3 mg/kg caffeine or a caffeine-free placebo gum (PLA) for 10 min prior to undertaking a series of on-ice and off-ice tests. The off-ice tests included grip force, the counter-movement jump (CMJ), and the squat jump (SJ). The on-ice tests included a 35 m sprint, the S-Shape agility test, and the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test (Yo-Yo IR1 test). The CMJ height (CAF: 47.2 ± 4.4; PL: 45.9 ± 3.5; p = 0.035; Cohen’s d = 0.32) and SJ height (CAF: 46.7 ± 4.1; PL: 44.9 ± 3.8; p = 0.047; Cohen’s d = 0.44) were found to be significantly higher in the CAF than in the PL trial. However, there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in grip force, as well as in the 35 m sprint, the S-Shape agility test, and the Yo-Yo IR1 test. The present study found that, following a jet lag intervention, although the consumption of caffeinated gum resulted in an increase in vertical jump height, it had no impact on performance in the ice tests. The results of this study may help coaches and athletes consider the need for caffeine supplementation when experiencing jet lag. Full article

This study aimed to identify the aerobic and anaerobic metabolic performance capacities contributing to Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery level 2 (Yo-Yo IR2) test performance. Nineteen recreational Australian footballers completed a Yo-Yo IR2 test, and on another day a treadmill peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) and maximal accumulated oxygen deficit test in a randomised counter-balanced order. The maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) procedures included 5 × 5 min sub-maximal continuous runs at progressively higher speeds whilst VO2 was recorded; thereafter, speed was incrementally increased to elicit VO2peak. After 35 min of rest, participants ran at a speed equivalent to 115% of VO2peak until exhaustion, at which point expired air was collected to determine maximal accumulated oxygen deficit. Relationships between variables were assessed using Pearson’s correlation and partial correlations. Maximum aerobic speed, relative intensity, and VO2peak were significantly correlated with Yo-Yo IR2 performance. High Yo-Yo IR2 performers also had higher MAS, relative intensity, and VO2peak levels. However, when higher maximum aerobic speed, relative intensity, and VO2peak were controlled for each other and analysed independently, neither maximal aerobic speed nor VO2peak correlated with Yo-Yo IR2 performance. Yo-Yo IR2 performance is the result of a complex interaction between several variables. Training programs should primarily focus on improving VO2peak, maximal aerobic speed, and relative intensity to optimize Yo-Yo IR2 test performance. Full article
