The uplink/downlink (UL/DL) decoupled access, which allows users to associate with different base stations (BSs), including small BSs (SBSs) and macro BSs (MBSs), has emerged as a network architecture in heterogeneous cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communications. It can be tailored to mitigate the signal interference and attenuation impairments that cell-edge vehicles face, while vehicles closer to a BS can opt for coupled access. Therefore, a UL/DL intelligent decoupled access network that integrates decoupled and coupled access approaches is urgently needed for C-V2X communications. In this paper, we present a novel framework for UL/DL intelligent decoupled access in C-V2X networks in the context of fifth-generation mobile communications (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G). We propose a joint optimization approach for radio resource allocation, power control, and user association to enhance the network throughput of UL and DL while meeting the service quality requirements of vehicle users. Specifically, we formulate the problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem and transform it into a standard convex optimization problem by introducing various auxiliary variables. An efficient iterative algorithm based on successive convex optimization techniques is introduced to obtain a sub-optimal solution. The proposed framework uniquely integrates decoupled and coupled access modes within a unified optimization formulation, enabling dynamic mode selection based on network load. Extensive simulation results demonstrate a significant performance improvement of the proposed UL/DL intelligent decoupled access in C-V2X networks compared with benchmark schemes. Full article

Uplink/downlink (UL/DL) decoupled access has emerged as a promising paradigm for heterogeneous cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) networks in beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G systems. In multi-operator scenarios, wireless service provider (WSP) selection becomes critical for vehicles to ensure communication quality while minimizing costs. This paper investigates the performance analysis and WSP selection problem in UL/DL decoupled access C-V2X networks. We derive tractable expressions for spectral efficiency of both UL and DL using stochastic geometry, considering three decoupled access cases where UL and DL independently associate with macro base stations (MBSs) or small base stations (SBSs). We formulate a hierarchical game framework combining evolutionary game for vehicle WSP selection and non-cooperative game for WSP bandwidth allocation. An evolutionary game algorithm is proposed to reach the equilibrium, and the uniqueness of Nash equilibrium in bandwidth allocation is proved. Extensive simulations validate the analytical results and demonstrate the convergence and stability of the proposed game framework. Full article

Fully decoupled radio access networks (FD-RANs) achieve spectral efficiency and coverage flexibility for 6G via independent uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) base station operation, yet dynamic user mobility brings critical challenges to joint user association and resource allocation. Asymmetric interference and heterogeneous base station capacities cause persistent network unfairness, while uncoordinated mobility management triggers ping-pong handovers and heavy handover overheads. To resolve these intertwined problems, we propose a fully decoupled, mobility-resilient and fairness-guaranteed framework, which integrates short-term congestion pricing with the long-term Jain fairness index for equitable resource distribution and introduces a composite handover penalty with a strict physical hysteresis margin to block invalid handovers. We formulate the optimization problem as a novel Sliding-Window Hysteresis-Integrated Fairness Two-Layer Multi-Armed Bandit (SHIFT-MAB) model, embedding an exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) sliding-window mechanism to track real-time channel fluctuations efficiently. Theoretical analysis confirms the model’s decoupling optimality, sublinear regret bound and fairness convergence. Extensive simulations show that SHIFT-MAB effectively suppresses invalid handovers, ensures high network fairness, optimizes system utility and achieves a superior handover–throughput trade-off. Device-to-device communication offers a promising technology for the 5G network that aims to enhance the data rate, reduce latency and cost, improve energy efficiency, and provide other desired features. The 5G heterogeneous network (5GHN) with a decoupled association strategy of downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) is a promising solution for the challenges faced in the 4G heterogeneous network (4GHN). The research presented in this paper evaluates the performance of the 4GHN as well as a DL-and-UL-coupled (DU-CP) access scheme in comparison with the 5GHN with a DL-and-UL-decoupled (DU-DCP) access scheme in terms of the energy efficiency and network throughput in four-tier heterogeneous networks. The energy and throughput are optimized for both scenarios, i.e., DU-CP and DU-DCP, and the results are compared. Detailed performance analyses of the DU-CP and DU-DCP access schemes were conducted with the help of comparisons of the results achieved by implementing a genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Both of these algorithms are suited for the non-linear problem under investigation in which the search space is large. The simulation results have shown that the DU-DCP access scheme gives a better performance than the DU-CP scheme in a four-tier heterogeneous network in terms of network throughput and energy efficiency. The PSO achieves an energy efficiency of 12 Mbits/joule for the DU-CP and 42 Mbits/joule for the DU-DCP, whereas the GA yields an energy efficiency of 28 Mbits/joule for the DU-CP and 55 Mbits/joule for the DU-DCP. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of three other schemes. The results show that the DU-DCP scheme using the GA outperforms the compared methods. Full article
