Textures and Inclusions in Mengyin Diamonds: Insights on Their Formation Within the Southeastern North China Craton

Beyond its renowned gemological value, diamond serves as a vital economic mineral and a unique messenger from Earth’s deep interior, preserving invaluable geological information. Since the Mengyin region is the source of China’s greatest diamond deposits, research on the diamonds there not only adds to our understanding of their origins but also offers an essential glimpse into the development of the North China Craton’s mantle lithosphere. In this article, 50 diamond samples from Mengyin were investigated using gemological microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, DiamondView™, and X-ray micro-computed tomography (CT) scanning technologies. The types of Mengyin diamonds are mainly Type IaAB, Type IaB, and Type IIa, and the impurity elements are N and H. Inclusions in diamonds serve as direct indicators of mantle-derived components, providing crucial constraints on the pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions during their crystallization. Mengyin diamonds have both eclogite-type and peridotite-type inclusions. It formed at depths ranging from 147 to 176 km, which corresponds to source pressures of approximately 4.45–5.35 GPa, as determined by the Raman shifts of olivine inclusions. The discovery of coesite provides key mineralogical evidence for subduction of an ancient oceanic plate in the source region. The surface morphology of diamonds varies when they are reabsorbed by melts from the mantle, reflecting distinctive features that record subsequent geological events. Distinctive surface features observed on Mengyin diamonds include fusion pits, tile-like etch patterns, and growth steps. Specifically, regular flat-bottomed negative trigons are mainly formed during diamond resorption in kimberlite melts with a low CO2 (XCO2 < ~0.5) and high H2O content. The samples exhibit varying fluorescence under DiamondView™, displaying blue, green, and a combination of blue and green colors. This diversity indicates that the diamonds have undergone a complex process of non-uniform growth. The nitrogen content of the melt composition also varies significantly throughout the different growth stages. The N3 center is responsible for the blue fluorescence, suggesting that it originated in a long-term, hot, high-nitrogen craton, and the varied ring band structure reveals localized, episodic environmental variations. Radiation and medium-temperature annealing produce H3 centers, which depict stagnation throughout the ascent of kimberlite magma and are responsible for the green fluorescence. Full article

Reconstructing relationships between urban agglomeration and relevant ecosystems from an ecosystem services perspective and quantitatively assessing their interactive status holds significant implications for achieving coordinated development. Taking Shandong Peninsula Urban Agglomeration (SPUA) as our study area, we developed a Cities-ESV Coupling Index (I) serving as a composite metric for assessing city–ecosystem coupling dynamics through a multidimensional framework encompassing the following: (1) urban development level, (2) ecosystem service value (ESV), (3) ecosystem service physical quantity, and (4) spatial balance degree of ecosystem service, operationalized through 10 selected indicators. Our methodology integrates ESV quantification, biophysical assessment, correlation analysis modeling, and spatial autocorrelation modeling to comprehensively evaluate coupling relationships between cities and ecosystems across 16 cities and 78 counties. This study innovatively integrates ESV quantification with biophysical assessment methodologies in indicator selection, while strategically incorporating spatial agglomeration metrics. The multidimensional framework effectively addresses the prevalent oversimplification in existing ecosystem service measurement paradigms. The findings are as follows: the total ESV is 13,977.87 × 108 CNY/a, which accounts for about 20% of the total GDP of SPUA. The Cities-ESV coupling index (I) of four cities, including Dongying, Linyi, Yantai, and Weifang, ranks among the top in SPUA, while that of seven counties, namely Weshan, Qixia, Yiyuan, Yishui, Mengyin, and Linqu, is at a relatively high-level. The conclusion is as follows: the total ESV in SPUA had been continuously decreasing. The coupling relationship between cities and ecosystems are significantly negatively correlated, and the Cities-ESV coupling index (I) of SPUA has obvious regional differentiation characteristics. Therefore, differentiated ecological land protection policies should be formulated to curb the trend of continuous decline in ESV. Full article

The Upper Jurassic Mengyin Formation sandstones are important targets for petroleum exploration in Dongying Depression of Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China. Although the current burial depth of the Upper Jurassic Mengyin Formation sandstones is shallow (900–2500 m), the reservoir rocks are characterized by low porosity and low permeability due to the complex diagenetic modifications after deposition. Experimental tests and statistical methods, such as thin section, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cathodoluminescence (CL), high pressure mercury injection (HPMI) and fluid inclusion analysis are conducted to delineate the mineralogical, petrographic and petro-physical characteristics. Results show that physical and chemical processes, including burial depth, burial and thermal history and pore fluid evolution, are both important for the diagenetic modifications that result in a variety changes in pore system and reservoir quality. According to numerical simulation of porosity evolution during lengthy burial and thermal history, porosity loss due to the early deep burial process under the high paleo-geothermal gradient can reach about 20%. Moreover, the burial history (effective stress and temperature) has a better guidance to reservoir quality prediction compared with current burial depth. The extensive compaction in sandstones also resulted in extremely low pore fluid flow during subsequent diagenetic processes, thus, the reaction products of dissolution cannot be removed, which would be precipitated as carbonate cements during stable reburial phase. Dissolution resulted from uncomformity-related meteoric flushing have been the most important porosity-enhancing factor in Mengyin Formation sandstones in spite of low thin section porosity averaged out to 3.22%. Secondary pores derived from dissolution of unstable silicates are more likely to develop in sandstones near the regional unconformity. The oil source fault activities may enhance the heterogeneity of reservoir rocks and control the reservoir quality by inducing micro-fractures and providing the main pathways for hydrocarbon migration.
