This study explores the design of Metaverse technologies for preserving and teaching Lanna Dance, a traditional cultural heritage of Northern Thailand. It addresses the challenges of sustaining intangible cultural heritage by developing an immersive learning system that integrates motion capture, generative AI, and gamified virtual environments. Grounded in Situated Learning Theory and adaptive learning, the platform features four interactive zones, the Motion Showcase, Knowledge Exhibition, Video and AI Interaction, and Interactive Game Zone, offering learners multifaceted, context-rich experiences. Using a quasi-experimental design with 36 participants, the study evaluates learning outcomes, motivation, and user satisfaction. Results show significant improvements in knowledge acquisition and intrinsic motivation, along with high usability scores, indicating the effectiveness of immersive digital environments in enhancing cultural appreciation and skill development. The findings offer practical insights into Metaverse design for immersive cultural education, supporting educators, cultural institutions, and policymakers in developing scalable and engaging solutions for preserving intangible heritage through emerging technologies. In Chiang Mai, Thailand, there has been an increasing demand for lighting design strategies that enhance tangible and intangible values of cultural heritage destinations. This research explores the role of lighting design in enhancing the cultural experiences and promoting the cultural tourism of Lanna Buddhist architecture. Suan Dok Temple was selected as a case study due to its historical, social, and cultural significance. This research uses qualitative approaches such as field surveys, photographic documentation, and interviews with temple authorities, cultural heritage experts and tourism professionals for the formulation of initial users’ requirements and lighting design criteria and concept. Data analysis suggested that cultural heritage and conservation, cultural tourism management, and operation and maintenance are important factors in heritage lighting design for cultural tourism. Realistic rendering images of lighting design scenes for the temple’s chedis and vihara are generated based on the concept of luminance layers representing the Buddhist cosmology idea. In addition, lighting operation and installation details are developed and presented to stakeholders for discussion on contextual and operational appropriateness. Finally, the study discusses critical lighting design factors for the development of lighting design solutions for heritage sites, particularly Lanna Buddhist temples, contributing to sustainable cultural tourism. This study employs the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) framework to explore the integration of landscape plants as green heritage with Lanna urban identity in Chiang Mai Old City, Thailand. The research focuses on 38 Lanna temples, investigating the characteristics and roles of plant materials in these sacred spaces. Through comprehensive ground surveys, GIS mapping, and structured interviews with monks, temple caretakers, and long-term residents, the study documents the types, locations, and uses of native and exotic plants. The findings emphasize the cultural, aesthetic, and ecological significance of heritage trees, such as the Bodhi trees and the Yang tree. These trees are pivotal in maintaining cultural continuity, supporting traditional rituals, and enhancing biodiversity. The study also reveals that while ornamental and edible plants are actively used in rituals and community practices, medicinal and applicable plants are preserved more for their historical value than practical use. This research underscores the necessity of sustainable landscape management, community engagement, and the preservation of ethnobotanical knowledge to mitigate the impacts of urbanization. By integrating green heritage into urban planning, the study provides valuable insights for enhancing the cultural and environmental landscape of Chiang Mai. Full article

Northern Thailand, the main part of the Lanna region, is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups, each with their own food and cultural heritage. The bacterial compositions in fermented soybean (FSB) products indigenous to three Lanna ethnolinguistic groups, including Karen, Lawa, and Shan, were investigated in this study. Bacterial DNA was extracted from the FSB samples and subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing using the Illumina sequencing platform. Metagenomic data showed that the predominant bacteria in all FSBs were members of the genus Bacillus (49.5–86.8%), and the Lawa FSB had the greatest bacterial diversity. The presence of genera Ignatzschineria, Yaniella, Atopostipes in the Karen and Lawa FSBs and Proteus in the Shan FSB might be indicators of food hygiene problems during processing. The network analysis predicted antagonistic effects of Bacillus against some indicator and pathogenic bacteria. The functional prediction revealed some potential functional properties of these FSBs. The presence of Bacillus in all FSBs and Vagococcus in the Shan FSB suggests that these FSBs could potentially be good sources of beneficial bacteria, and they should be conserved and promoted for health and food security reasons. However, food processing hygiene measures should be introduced and monitored to warrant their properties as health foods. Full article

Lanna painting is a unique type of painting in many temples in the Northern Thai region. Similar to most mural paintings, they usually decay over time partly due to the activity of microbes. This study aimed to investigate the microorganisms from two Lanna masterpiece paintings in two temples that differ in the numbers of visitors using both culture-dependent and -independent approaches. The microorganisms isolated from the murals were also tested for the biodeterioration activities including discoloration, acid production and calcium precipitation. Most microorganisms extracted from the paintings were able to discolor the paints, but only fungi were able to discolor, produce acids and precipitate calcium. The microorganism communities, diversity and functional prediction were also investigated using the culture-independent method. The diversity of microorganisms and functional prediction were different between the two temples. Gammaproteobacteria was the predominant group of bacteria in both temples. However, the fungal communities were different between the two temples as Aspergillus was the most abundant genus in the site with higher number of visitors [Buak Krok Luang temple (BK)]. Conversely, mural paintings at Tha Kham temple (TK) were dominated by the Neodevriesia genera. We noticed that a high number of visitors (Buak Krok Luang) was correlated with microbial contamination from humans while the microbial community at Tha Kham temple had a higher proportion of saprotrophs. These results could be applied to formulate a strategy to mitigate the amount of tourists as well as manage microorganism to slow down the biodeterioration process. Full article
