Background: Spinal cord injury is a multisystem disease which compromises independence and quality of life; remote care models represent an opportunity for long-term management of complications. The aim of this study was to explore remote care models for chronic spinal cord injury patients. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was carried out. Five databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar) were systematically explored with a time limit of five years. Included studies were assessed using Jadad Score and PEDro Scale. Results: Four RCTs were included in this systematic review. In all studies, multidisciplinary home care supported by technology were compared with in-person models. Remote care models were effective in managing pressure injury, infection, and muscle atrophy and improve quality of life. Conclusions: Remote care models can be a key tool for improving self-efficacy, decreasing hospitalizations and preventing long-term mortality. Full article

Background: Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are essential tasks performed at home and used in healthcare to monitor sedentary behavior, track rehabilitation therapy, and monitor chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The Barthel Index, used by healthcare professionals, has limitations due to its subjectivity. Human activity recognition (HAR) is a more accurate method using Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to assess ADLs more accurately. This work aims to create a singular, adaptable, and heterogeneous ADL dataset that integrates information from various sources, ensuring a rich representation of different individuals and environments. Methods: A literature review was conducted in Scopus, the University of California Irvine (UCI) Machine Learning Repository, Google Dataset Search, and the University of Cauca Repository to obtain datasets related to ADLs. Inclusion criteria were defined, and a list of dataset characteristics was made to integrate multiple datasets. Twenty-nine datasets were identified, including data from various accelerometers, gyroscopes, inclinometers, and heart rate monitors. These datasets were classified and analyzed from the review. Tasks such as dataset selection, categorization, analysis, cleaning, normalization, and data integration were performed. Results: The resulting unified dataset contained 238,990 samples, 56 activities, and 52 columns. The integrated dataset features a wealth of information from diverse individuals and environments, improving its adaptability for various applications. Conclusions: In particular, it can be used in various data science projects related to ADL and HAR, and due to the integration of diverse data sources, it is potentially useful in addressing bias in and improving the generalizability of machine learning models. (1) Background: Digital Health Technology (DHT) is an emerging method for stroke rehabilitation that could potentially be very effective in solving different problems in the therapeutic process. This study aims to explore the use of DHT for stroke rehabilitation in Canada, providing insights into how current technologies have been implemented and identifying gaps to inform future decision-making in clinical, research, and policy settings in the Canadian setting. (2) Methods: We followed the Arksey and O’Malley framework for scoping reviews. The original search was created in Medline (Ovid) and translated to PsycINFO (Ovid), Scopus, and CINAHL with Full Text (EBSCOhost). To locate grey literature, we searched Canadian Theses and Google. The search yielded 163 articles, of which we included 14 (8.6%) in the review. (3) Results: Fourteen studies published between 2010 and 2022 in Canada varied in design: 4 qualitative (28.6%), 4 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) (28.6%), 2 mixed methods (14.3%), and other types. The main goals included assessing intervention effectiveness (35.7%), client (28.6%) and clinician (28.6%) perceptions of technology, and feasibility (21.5%). Most studies focused on upper extremity (UE) function (85.71%), with some addressing walking speed (7.1%) and sitting balance (7.1%). Research mainly targeted the chronic phase of stroke (64.3%). Studies were conducted in home (50%) and institutional settings (42.9%). Technologies included sensors (50%), virtual reality (VR) (42.9%), games (28.6%), telerehabilitation (28.6%), and robots (14.3%). (4) Conclusions: This scoping review offers key insights into the use of DHTs for stroke rehabilitation in Canada, highlighting the types of technologies, their effectiveness, and the facilitators and barriers to adoption. These technologies show promise in improving patient outcomes, and their integration into Canadian healthcare systems presents a significant opportunity to enhance stroke rehabilitation. Full article

Background/Objectives: In 2010, approximately 60.5 million people were affected by glaucoma, making it the leading cause of permanent vision impairment globally. With the rise of telehealth tools and technological advancements in glaucoma care, this review aims to provide an up-to-date analysis regarding remote monitoring systems in glaucoma management. Methods: A systematic literature search (in compliance with PRISMA guidelines) was conducted across six databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library) and one grey literature source (Google Scholar), covering the period from 2000 to 2024. Relevant studies meeting predefined inclusion criteria were identified and analyzed. Results: The search identified 21 eligible studies focusing on various glaucoma telemonitoring tools. Several studies demonstrated the potential for continuous remote intraocular pressure (IOP) monitoring and highlighted the effectiveness of home-based visual field-testing technologies (e.g., Melbourne Rapid Fields, Eyecatcher, and VF-Home), which showed results closely matching in-clinic tests. All 21 studies underwent risk of bias assessment with appropriate tools based on study design, and none showed a high overall risk of bias, indicating robust methodology. Conclusions: Glaucoma telemonitoring tools are feasible and cost-effective, helping to reduce patient travel and waiting times and improving patient satisfaction. However, periodic in-person examinations remain necessary to optimally monitor disease progression and adjust treatments. Future directions should focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of advanced algorithms (including artificial intelligence) to further enhance patient outcomes in teleglaucoma care. Background: Globally, approximately 65% of adolescents undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) adhered to their treatment, whereas only 55% achieved viral suppression in 2023. The low rate of viral suppression is concerning, as elevated viral loads are associated with a heightened risk of opportunistic infections, progression to advanced HIV disease, increased mortality, and greater HIV transmission rates. We conducted this scoping review to identify the facilitators and barriers to ART adherence among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Methods: We conducted this scoping review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. We searched for peer-reviewed articles published in English from 2014 to 2024 across the SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Africa Journals Online, and Google Scholar databases. Two reviewers independently selected the articles and extracted the data. We used NVivo to develop codes and categories of facilitators and barriers. Results: We used 30 articles reporting on studies conducted in 13 countries in this review. The total number of participants in the studies was 12,250. Sixteen articles reported on qualitative studies, nine on quantitative studies, and five on mixed-methods studies. This scoping review identified various personal (14 articles), interpersonal and social (15 articles), healthcare system-related (9 articles), medication-related (7 articles), and economic (2 articles) factors that facilitate ART adherence among AYAs. Additionally, the scoping review also identified various personal (28 articles), interpersonal and social (13 articles), healthcare system-related (14 articles), medication-related (20 articles), school- or work-related (6 articles), and economic (14 articles) factors that hinder ART adherence among AYAs. Conclusions: Enhancing ART adherence in AYAs requires multiple strategies, including the reduction of internalized stigma, implementation of community awareness campaigns, harm reduction approaches for AYAs who misuse substances, comprehensive education on HIV, and the provision of support from school staff and leadership, alongside the adoption of differentiated service delivery (DSD), which encompasses home-based ART delivery, refills at private pharmacies, community ART distribution centers, and patient-led community ART refill groups, as well as multi-month dispensing practices. Background: Pregnant women are likely to experience depression due to various factors. Hypnobirthing is a non-invasive therapy that can be used to treat depression during pregnancy. This study aims to systematically review the effect of hypnobirthing on antenatal depression. Methods: This study employs a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. Articles were retrieved from PubMed, ScienceDirect, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and hand searches. Articles were included for review if they met the following inclusion criteria: (1) published in the last ten years (2014–2024); (2) the articles published in English; (3) article types are original research articles and reviews; (4) the full text can be retrieved; and (5) the findings of the selected articles should discuss the effect of hypnobirthing or hypnosis for birth. Articles were critically appraised using Joanna Briggs Institute tools. Results: The initial search yielded 7603 records; nine studies met the inclusion criteria for systematic review, and four studies for meta-analysis. The articles were analyzed, and findings were presented in narrative ways and categorized into three themes: the effect of therapy, the administration of the therapy, and the mechanism of the therapy. The therapy was performed by different methods, involving hypnosis, daily relaxation, progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises, the J-breathing technique, meditation, visualization, and ego strengthening. Additionally, participants were encouraged to do self-practice at home and were followed up by personal visits, phone calls, or text messages. Conclusions: The majority of the studies found that hypnobirthing ameliorated antenatal depression, despite the variation in initial administration and the duration of therapy. Further research is needed to standardize therapy protocols and explore long-term outcomes. Full article

Gesture recognition technology has emerged as a transformative solution for natural and intuitive human–computer interaction (HCI), offering touch-free operation across diverse fields such as healthcare, gaming, and smart home systems. In mobile contexts, where hygiene, convenience, and the ability to operate under resource constraints are critical, hand gesture recognition provides a compelling alternative to traditional touch-based interfaces. However, implementing effective gesture recognition in real-world mobile settings involves challenges such as limited computational power, varying environmental conditions, and the requirement for robust offline–online data management. In this study, we introduce ThumbsUp, which is a gesture-driven system, and employ a partially systematic literature review approach (inspired by core PRISMA guidelines) to identify the key research gaps in mobile gesture recognition. By incorporating insights from deep learning–based methods (e.g., CNNs and Transformers) while focusing on low resource consumption, we leverage Google’s MediaPipe in our framework for real-time detection of 21 hand landmarks and adaptive lighting pre-processing, enabling accurate recognition of a “thumbs-up” gesture. The system features a secure queue-based offline–cloud synchronization model, which ensures that the captured images and metadata (encrypted with AES-GCM) remain consistent and accessible even with intermittent connectivity. Experimental results under dynamic lighting, distance variations, and partially cluttered environments confirm the system’s superior low-light performance and decreased resource consumption compared to baseline camera applications. Additionally, we highlight the feasibility of extending ThumbsUp to incorporate AI-driven enhancements for abrupt lighting changes and, in the future, electromyographic (EMG) signals for users with motor impairments. Our comprehensive evaluation demonstrates that ThumbsUp maintains robust performance on typical mobile hardware, showing resilience to unstable network conditions and minimal reliance on high-end GPUs. These findings offer new perspectives for deploying gesture-based interfaces in the broader IoT ecosystem, thus paving the way toward secure, efficient, and inclusive mobile HCI solutions. Voice-controlled devices are becoming increasingly common in our everyday lives as well as in medicine. Whether it is our smartphones, with voice assistants that make it easier to access functions, or IoT (Internet of Things) devices that let us control certain areas of our home with voice commands using sensors and different communication networks, or even medical robots that can be controlled by a doctor with voice instructions. Over the last decade, systems using voice control have made great progress, both in terms of accuracy of voice processing and usability. The topic of voice control is intertwined with the application of artificial intelligence (AI), as the mapping of spoken commands into written text and their understanding is mostly conducted by some kind of trained AI model. Our research had two objectives. The first was to design and develop a system that enables doctors to evaluate medical data in 3D using voice control. The second was to describe the legal and ethical issues involved in using AI-based solutions for voice control. During our research, we created a voice control module for an existing software called PathoVR, using a model taught by Google to interpret the voice commands given by the user. Our research, presented in this paper, can be divided into two parts. In the first, we have designed and developed a system that allows the user to evaluate 3D pathological medical serial sections using voice commands. In contrast, in the second part of our research, we investigated the legal and ethical issues that may arise when using voice control in the medical field. In our research, we have identified legal and ethical barriers to the use of artificial intelligence in voice control, which need to be answered in order to make this technology part of everyday medicine. This research presents the design and implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based solution to measure the percentage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) inside domestic stationary tanks. The IoT-based sensor, in addition to displaying the percentage of the LPG level in the tank to the user through a mobile application (app), has the advantage of simultaneously sharing the acquired data with an LPG filling plant via the Internet. The design process and calculations for the selection of the electronic components of the IoT-based sensor are presented. The methodology for obtaining and calibrating the measurement of the tank filling percentage from the magnetic level measurement system is explained in detail. The operation of the developed software, and the communication protocols used are also explained so that the data can be queried both in the user’s app and on the gas company’s web platform safely. The use of the Clark and Wright savings algorithm is proposed to sufficiently optimize the distribution routes that tank trucks should follow when serving different home refill requests from customers located in different places in a city. The experimental results confirm the functionality and viability of the hardware and software developed. In addition, by having the precise location of the tank, the generation of optimized gas refill routes for thirty customers using the heuristic algorithm and a visualization of them on Google Maps is demonstrated. This can lead to competitive advantages for home gas distribution companies. Full article

Coastal zones, where land meets ocean, are home to a large portion of the global population and play a crucial role in human survival and development. These regions are shaped by complex geological processes and influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, making effective management essential for addressing population growth, environmental degradation, and resource sustainability. However, the inherent complexity of coastal zones complicates their study, and traditional in situ methods are often inefficient. Remote sensing technologies have significantly advanced coastal zone research, with different sensors providing diverse perspectives. These sensors are typically used for classification tasks (e.g., coastline extraction, coastal classification) and retrieval tasks (e.g., aquatic color, wetland monitoring). Recent improvements in resolution and the advent of deep learning have led to notable progress in classification, while platforms like Google Earth Engine (GEE) have enabled the development of high-quality, global-scale products. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of coastal zone interpretation, discussing platforms, sensors, spectral characteristics, and key challenges while proposing potential solutions for future research and management. Background/Objectives: Despite the growing recognition of housing as a significant concern for individuals with a spinal cord injury/dysfunction (SCI/D), there is limited research available on this topic. This scoping review aimed to identify and describe the literature on housing across the continuum for people with an SCI/D. Methods: This review utilized Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review framework. Five databases were searched including MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL Plus (EBSCO), PsycINFO (Ovid), and Web of Science (Core Collection). In addition, Google’s Advanced Search function was used to search the gray literature, and reference lists from the included studies were scanned. A preliminary assessment of the Theory of Access (TOA) constructs and their relationships was conducted using Penchansky and Thomas’ Theory of Access and Saurman’s additional updates. An adapted version of this theory was developed by the research team to identify the types of studies that assess the TOA’s six constructs and was used to identify knowledge gaps to advance research in this field. Results: The search yielded 25,861 records, with 36 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Data analysis revealed the participants’ sociodemographic and impairment characteristics, as well as essential information pertaining to housing across the continuum for individuals with an SCI/D, both of which were inconsistently reported across the studies. Several studies (n = 18) reported on the influence of home adaptations on the health and well-being of individuals with an SCI/D. When framed within the TOA, issues of accessibility presented the most substantial barriers for the SCI/D community, followed by acceptability and availability. Conclusions: The findings of this scoping review suggest that housing is an understudied topic and that further research is required to generate evidence to better support the housing needs of individuals with an SCI/D globally. The COVID-19 Pandemic and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Among Immigrant Women in Canada: A Narrative Review

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic brought myriad challenges and disruptions to societies worldwide. The impact of the pandemic on immigrant women living in Canada and who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) was very concerning during lockdowns specifically. As Canada implemented social distancing measures and stay-at-home orders to curb the spread of the virus, immigrant women—already at a heightened risk of IPV due to factors such as language barriers and immigration status—faced an increased likelihood of being trapped in abusive situations, with limited access to essential support services such as shelters, counseling centers, and legal aid. This narrative review aims to illuminate the experiences of IPV including the challenges and strategies used to cope during the pandemic among immigrant women. While this narrative review aims to obtain an extensive understanding of the IPV experiences among immigrant women during the pandemic, it also highlights the need for developing culturally sensitive interventions to address IPV challenges for immigrant women in similar contexts. A search was undertaken of multiple databases: Medline, CINHAL, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. To identify studies related to IPV and COVID-19, various search terms were used including “abused women”, “COVID-19”, and “IPV” and their synonyms. This review employs the social–ecological model and intersectionality to illuminate the IPV experiences of immigrant women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Four themes emerged from this study including the realities of COVID-19 restrictions; IPV vulnerabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic; the impacts of IPV and the COVID-19 pandemic; and the strategies for addressing IPV (women and system perspectives). We draw on past research and the knowledge of our multidisciplinary team of researchers to recommend culturally sensitive resources and health services for abused women living in Canada as well as highlight effective intervention strategies to address the varied and complex needs of these women. The Impact of Digital Devices on Children’s Health: A Systematic Literature Review

Background: The impact of prolonged digital device exposure on physical and mental health in children has been widely investigated by the scientific community. Additionally, the lockdown periods due to the COVID-19 pandemic further exposed children to screen time for e-learning activities. The aim of this systematic review (PROSPERO Registration: CRD42022315596) was to evaluate the effect of digital device exposure on children’s health. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was additionally explored to verify the further exposure of children due to the e-learning environment. Methods: Available online databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, BASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus) were searched for study selection. The PICO model was followed by including a target population of children aged 2 to 12 years, exposed or not to any type of digital devices, while evaluating changes in both physical and mental health outcomes. The quality assessment was conducted by using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tool. Synthesis without meta-analysis (SWiM) guidelines were followed to provide data synthesis. Results: Forty studies with a total sample of 75,540 children were included in this systematic review. The study design was mainly cross-sectional (n = 28) and of moderate quality (n = 33). Overall, the quality score was reduced due to recall, selection, and detection biases; blinding procedures influenced the quality score of controlled trials, and outcome validity reduced the quality score of cohort studies. Digital device exposure affected physical activity engagement and adiposity parameters; sleep and behavioral problems emerged in children overexposed to digital devices. Ocular conditions were also reported and associated with higher screen exposure. Home confinement during COVID-19 further increased digital device exposure with additional negative effects. Conclusions: The prolonged use of digital devices has a significant negative impact on children aged 2 to 12, leading to decreased physical activity, sleep disturbances, behavioral issues, lower academic performance, socioemotional challenges, and eye strain, particularly following extended online learning during lockdowns. Background: Refugee children with disabilities are vulnerable to developing dysfunctional coping skills due to barriers in accessing health care services, including occupational therapy (OT). This study investigated the perceptions of refugee caregivers regarding the use of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) as a treatment for coping skills among their children with disabilities. Methods: A qualitative survey was used to analyse the coping mechanisms and access to services among refugee children with disabilities, as well as their caregivers’ perceptions regarding the use of MBIs. The caregivers were recruited using convenience sampling from a database of individuals at the Al-Baqa’a refugee camp in Jordan via their community-based rehabilitation (CBR) centre. A demographic survey was sent to 156 refugees using WhatsApp. Refugees above the age of 18 years identifying as the caregivers of children with disabilities were eligible. Twenty-eight individuals completed the survey, and twenty-six were eligible. Open-ended questions asked about their child’s struggles, supports, barriers to support, and perceptions of MBIs. The data were collected via Google Sheets. Three researchers coded the responses using a descriptive coding method and line-by-line analysis. Results: Five themes were derived from the responses: “Daily Challenges”, “Support and Strategies”, “barriers to accessing support”, “MBIs: Caregiver Perceptions”, and “MBIs: Barriers”. The participants identified the behavioural, emotional, and cognitive challenges impacting their child’s participation. Financial and environmental constraints, stigma, and timing were the reported barriers to services. The participants felt positive about the potential of MBIs to support their children. Conclusions: Overall, this study obtained foundational data to establish accessible mental health programmes for refugees with disabilities. Further research is needed to transcend the barriers and maintain MBI programmes in the community and the home settings. Full article

Background/Objectives: The prevalence of the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been increasing globally, necessitating updates to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders with respect to ASD diagnosis. It is now recognised that ASD is related to sensory processing disorder, and sensory integration is considered a suitable intervention for treating children diagnosed with ASD. Methods: This paper provides a systematic review on a timeline from 2013 to 2023, based on the PRISMA model. Evidence was sought in the academic search engines Pubmed, Scielo, Eric, Dialnet, Springer, Base Search and Google Scholar, which produced 16 articles according to the inclusion criteria. Results: According to the results of this review, intervention with sensory integration in infants with ASD meets the criteria to be considered an evidence-based practice. The studies reviewed focused mainly on clinical settings and, therefore, we highlight the urgent need for further research to evaluate the effectiveness of sensory integration interventions in naturalistic settings such as homes and schools. Conclusions: This will help to obtain more representative data on how these interventions affect the daily lives of children with ASD. Full article
