This paper focuses on retrieving plant leaf images based on different features that can be useful in the plant industry. Various images and their features can be used to identify the type of leaf and its disease. For this purpose, a well-organized computer-assisted plant image retrieval approach is required that can use a hybrid combination of the color and shape attributes of leaf images for plant disease identification and botanical gardening in the agriculture sector. In this research work, an innovative framework is proposed for the retrieval of leaf images that uses a hybrid combination of color and shape features to improve retrieval accuracy. For the color features, the Color Difference Histograms (CDH) descriptor is used while shape features are determined using the Saliency Structure Histogram (SSH) descriptor. To extract the various properties of leaves, Hue and Saturation Value (HSV) color space features and First Order Statistical Features (FOSF) features are computed in CDH and SSH descriptors, respectively. After that, the HSV and FOSF features of leaf images are concatenated. The concatenated features of database images are compared with the query image in terms of the Euclidean distance and a threshold value of Euclidean distance is taken for retrieval of images. The best results are obtained at the threshold value of 80% of the maximum Euclidean distance. The system’s effectiveness is also evaluated with different performance metrics like precision, recall, and F-measure, and their values come out to be respectively 1.00, 0.96, and 0.97, which is better than individual feature descriptors. Emerging antimicrobial-resistant pathogens highlight the importance of developing novel interventions. Here, we investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) in calf lung infections and in airway epithelial cells stimulated with pathogens, and/or bacterial components. During a natural exposure, 100 male calves were fed milk replacer with or without FOS for 8 weeks. Then, immune parameters and cytokine/chemokine levels in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and blood were measured, and clinical scores were investigated. Calf primary bronchial epithelial cells (PBECs) and human airway epithelial cells (A549) were treated with Mannheimia haemolytica, lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and/or flagellin, with or without FOS pretreatment. Thereafter, the cytokine/chemokine levels and epithelial barrier function were examined. Relative to the control (naturally occurring lung infections), FOS-fed calves had greater macrophage numbers in BALF and lower interleukin (IL)-8, IL-6, and IL-1β concentrations in the BALF and blood. However, FOS did not affect the clinical scores. At slaughter, FOS-fed calves had a lower severity of lung lesions compared to the control. Ex vivo, FOS prevented M. haemolytica-induced epithelial barrier dysfunction. Moreover, FOS reduced M. haemolytica- and flagellin-induced (but not LPS-induced) IL-8, TNF-α, and IL-6 release in PBECs and A549 cells. Overall, FOS had anti-inflammatory properties during the natural incidence of lung infections but had no effects on clinical symptoms. Full article

Six quaternary phosphonium salts (QPSs) in combination with phosphotungstic heteropolyacid, H3PW12O40, were tested in the epoxidation of rapeseed oil fatty acid methyl esters with a hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution. The QPSs consisted of trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium [P6], tributyl-tetradecylphosphonium [P4] or tetraoctylphosphonium [P8] cation and different anions—chloride (Cl), bromide (Br), tetrafluoroborate (BF4), bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (NTf2), bis(2,4,4-trimethyl-pentyl)phosphinate (Phosf). The influence of the kind of QPS and temperature on the epoxy number, iodine number, glycol content has been determined. The epoxidation was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and elemental analysis CHO. Two QPSs with a trihexyltetradecyphosphonium cation—[P6][Fosf] and [P6][Cl]—were selected as the most effective in the studied epoxidation process. The proposed kinetic model takes into consideration the two reactions, namely, epoxidation and epoxy ring opening involving the formation of hydroxyl groups. The rate constants and activation energies for epoxidation fatty acid methyl esters were determined. Full article
