Plant-based proteins are increasingly recognized for their environmental, ethical, and nutritional benefits. However, their digestibility varies due to factors such as molecular structure, amino acid composition, and processing methods. This review comprehensively analyzes methods used to assess plant protein digestibility, including in vivo, in vitro, and ex vivo approaches. While in vivo studies, particularly those using pigs, are considered the gold standard, in vitro and ex vivo models offer cost-effective and reproducible alternatives for simulating digestion. Additionally, antinutritional factors present in plant proteins can hinder digestibility, necessitating processing strategies such as fermentation, enzymatic hydrolysis, and high-pressure treatments to enhance protein bioavailability. Advances in evaluation techniques, including the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) and dynamic digestion models, offer more precise assessments of protein quality. By systematically comparing these methods, this review aims to guide food scientists and manufacturers in selecting appropriate evaluation strategies to improve the nutritional quality of plant-based protein products. Understanding the mechanisms influencing plant protein digestibility is essential for optimizing food formulations and supporting the broader adoption of sustainable protein sources in human diets. Infective endocarditis (IE) is a major public health condition due to the associated high morbidity and mortality. Our objective was to evaluate the utility of dual-time 2-deoxy-2-[18F] fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG) Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) imaging in the diagnosis of active IE in patients with suspected native valve endocarditis (NVE) and prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). For this purpose, a retrospective study was carried out, including patients suspicious of NVE or PVE who underwent a dual-time-point 18F-FDG PET/CT. A final diagnosis was established by the Endocarditis Team after patient follow-up using all the available findings. Sixty-nine patients were assessed. A final diagnosis of NVE was established in 3 patients of the 34 by 18F-FDG PET/CT and in the case of PVE was established in 20 patients of the 35. A statistically significant association was found when evaluating the association between PET diagnosis at early acquisition and final diagnosis of IE (χ2 = 30.198, p < 0.001) and PET diagnosis at delayed acquisition for final diagnosis of IE (χ2 = 9.412, p = 0.002). Delayed PET/CT imaging determined the IE diagnosis in 16/58 of the studies. In conclusion, delayed 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging seems to be useful in improving the definitive diagnosis of IE. Full article

Developing critical thinking skills appears to be a challenge for higher education institutions. However, little is known about the students’ points of view regarding the methodologies they consider to foster the development of this competence. To answer this question, a total of 263 Spanish university students participated in this study and were asked what they understood by critical thinking and the methodologies they considered to be the most effective for developing it. The results indicated that, based on students’ points of view, there were six methodologies that mainly contributed to developing critical thinking: Debates, project-based learning, practices in real contexts, doing research, cooperative learning, and case studies. These results were unanimous regardless of the student’s understanding of critical thinking: Analyzing/organizing, reasoning/arguing, questioning/asking oneself, evaluating, taking a position/taking a decision, compromising/acting. These findings have important theoretical and practical implications for teachers and educational institutions in relation to the development of critical thinking in higher education. Full article

The protective effects of breastfeeding on various childhood malignancies have been established but an association has not yet been determined for retinoblastoma (RB). We aimed to further investigate the role of breastfeeding in the severity of nonhereditary RB development, assessing relationship to (1) age at diagnosis, (2) ocular prognosis, measured by International Intraocular RB Classification (IIRC) or Intraocular Classification of RB (ICRB) group and success of eye salvage, and (3) extraocular involvement. Analyses were performed on a global dataset subgroup of 344 RB patients whose legal guardian(s) consented to answer a neonatal questionnaire. Patients with undetermined or mixed feeding history, family history of RB, or sporadic bilateral RB were excluded. There was no statistically significant difference between breastfed and formula-fed groups in (1) age at diagnosis (p = 0.20), (2) ocular prognosis measures of IIRC/ICRB group (p = 0.62) and success of eye salvage (p = 0.16), or (3) extraocular involvement shown by International Retinoblastoma Staging System (IRSS) at presentation (p = 0.74), lymph node involvement (p = 0.20), and distant metastases (p = 0.37). This study suggests that breastfeeding neither impacts the sporadic development nor is associated with a decrease in the severity of nonhereditary RB as measured by age at diagnosis, stage of disease, ocular prognosis, and extraocular spread. A further exploration into the impact of diet on children who develop RB is warranted. Full article
