A Forensic Approach to Complex Identification Cases: The Collapse of an Italian Cemetery into the Sea

Background/Objectives: On 22 February 2021, a coastal landslide in Italy caused the collapse of an old cemetery, displacing approximately 370 coffins, with over 200 plunging into the sea. This disaster necessitated the recovery and identification of human remains under challenging conditions to provide closure to families and uphold the dignity of the deceased. Methods: Recovery operations involved firefighters and scuba divers, followed by forensic analysis conducted by the Medical Staff of Legal and Forensic Medicine. A post-mortem team utilized forms adapted from Interpol’s Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) standards to document remains, which included 140 decomposed bodies and 193 bags of commingled skeletal remains. DNA samples were collected from 147 bone fragments, primarily long bones and teeth, and compared with ante-mortem data gathered from relatives. Results: Of the 77 eligible relatives, 66 consented to DNA sample collection for genetic profiling, and 28 bodies were identified. Personal effects, clothing, medical devices, and a strong match between non-genetic AM and PM data led to an attribution of identity of other 19 individuals. Advanced post-mortem phenomena were observed in remains spanning from the late 19th century to 2017. An identification area at the cemetery facilitated streamlined operations, emphasizing environmental preservation and forensic accuracy. Conclusions: The cemetery collapse highlights the necessity for tailored forensic approaches in disaster scenarios. Accurate identification methods, combining genetic analysis and secondary means, are crucial for ensuring dignified burials and providing closure to affected families. Full article

The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is a polyphagous invasive species native to America and considered one of the major cotton pests in Asia. It is currently threatening horticultural and ornamental protected crops in Mediterranean countries. Due to ecological and environmental concerns, the conventional chemical control of P. solenopsis in new areas of introduction is being replaced by exploring the potential of indigenous natural enemies as a sustainable biological control tool. After P. solenopsis introduction in Sicily (Italy), field surveys were conducted on native natural enemies attacking the mealybug to select promising biocontrol agents for field applications. For the first time, Aenasius arizonensis (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was reported in Europe, and the native Anagyrus matritensis (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was recorded in association with P. solenopsis. The two parasitoid species were identified by morphological features and molecularly using a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtCOI) gene. Because of missing information, additional morphological features were provided for the morphological identification of A. matritensis. In addition, the generalist predators Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, Hippodamia variegata and Parexochomus nigripennis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were also recorded attacking the invasive mealybug. To the best of our knowledge, no studies in the literature have reported on the relationship between the pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) concentration and undernutrition during pregnancy in sheep. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of undernutrition on the blood concentration of PAGs in pregnant ewes carrying single and multiple fetuses, undergoing either dietary energy restriction or receiving 100% of their energy requirements during the period of maximal placenta growth. From d 24 to 100 of pregnancy, the ewes were fed ryegrass hay and two different iso-proteic concentrates, fulfilling either 100% of the ewes’ energy requirements (control group; n = 30, 14 singleton pregnancies, 16 multiple pregnancies) or only 50% (feed-restricted group; n = 29; 11 singleton pregnancies, 18 multiple pregnancies). Blood samples were collected from all the ewes the day before intravaginal sponge insertion (T0) and, thereafter, every 30 days starting from d 24 of gestation (T1) until d 30 after parturition (T6), to determine the PAG, progesterone, NEFA, total protein, and glucose concentrations. Our results showed that PAG concentrations are not only influenced by the number of fetuses, but also by the ewe’s diet. In particular, the PAG marginal means were higher in the feed-restricted group than in the control group (7.8 ± 0.6 and 10.8 ± 0.9 ng/mL for the control and feed-restricted groups, respectively; p = 0.040). This finding confirms that a dietary restriction between d 24 and d 100 of gestation leads to a growth in placental functions as inferred from the increase in the concentration of the PAG levels. Therefore, the measurement of PAG concentrations, in addition to serving as a marker of pregnancy, can also serve as a marker of placental functionality. Full article

Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWASs) have identified a huge number of variants associated with different traits. However, their validation through in vitro and in vivo studies often lags well behind their identification. For variants associated with traits or diseases of biomedical interest, this gap delays the development of possible therapies. This issue also impacts beta-hemoglobinopathies, such as beta-thalassemia and sickle cell disease (SCD). The definitive cures for these diseases are currently bone marrow transplantation and gene therapy. However, limitations regarding their effective use restrict their worldwide application. Great efforts have been made to identify whether modulators of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) and, to a lesser extent, hemoglobin A2 (HbA2) are possible therapeutic targets. Herein, we performed the post-GWAS in vivo validation of two genes, cyclin D3 (CCND3) and nuclear factor I X (NFIX), previously associated with HbF and HbA2 levels. The absence of Ccnd3 expression in vivo significantly increased g (HbF) and d (HbA2) globin gene expression. Our data suggest that CCND3 is a possible therapeutic target in sickle cell disease. We also confirmed the association of Nfix with γ-globin gene expression and present data suggesting a possible role for Nfix in regulating Kruppel-like transcription factor 1 (Klf1), a master regulator of hemoglobin switching. This study contributes to filling the gap between GWAS variant identification and target validation for beta-hemoglobinopathies. Full article

Social media marketing communication is among the current strategies used to provide visibility to cultural heritage, sales promotions being especially relevant. Nevertheless, despite the fact that social media has now built significant momentum, there is still a dearth of research on the relationship between social marketing activities and brand equity. In this context, this study seeks to determine how the use of promotional discounts and free gifts on social media contributes to building heritage brand equity. To pursue this research aim, a quasi-experimental study was designed and carried out among online users, based on two promotional stimuli (discount vs. free gift). The findings suggest that gifts perform better in terms of increasing brand equity, except where the user presents a high level of sales promotion-proneness, in which case promotional discounts are more effective. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney disease. Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a major cause of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) worldwide, and it is linked to an increase in cardiovascular (CV) risk. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) increases morbidity and mortality among people living with diabetes. Risk factors for DN are chronic hyperglycemia and high blood pressure; the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockade improves glomerular function and CV risk in these patients. Recently, new antidiabetic drugs, including sodium–glucose transport protein 2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, have demonstrated additional contribution in delaying the progression of kidney disease and enhancing CV outcomes. The therapeutic goal is regression of albuminuria, but an atypical form of non-proteinuric diabetic nephropathy (NP-DN) is also described. In this review, we provide a state-of-the-art evaluation of current treatment strategies and promising emerging treatments. Full article

The high relevance of satellites for collecting information regarding precipitation at global scale implies the need of a continuous validation of satellite products to ensure good data quality over time and to provide feedback for updating and improving retrieval algorithms. However, validating satellite products using measurements collected by sensors at ground is still a challenging task. To date, the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) aboard the Core Satellite of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission is the only active sensor able to provide, at global scale, vertical profiles of rainfall rate, radar reflectivity, and Drop Size Distribution (DSD) parameters from space. In this study, we compare near surface GPM retrievals with long time series of measurements collected by seven laser disdrometers in Italy since the launch of the GPM mission. The comparison shows limited differences in the performances of the different GPM algorithms, be they dual- or single-frequency, although in most cases, the dual-frequency algorithms present the better performances. Furthermore, the agreement between satellite and ground-based estimates depends on the considered precipitation variable. The agreement is very promising for rain rate, reflectivity factor, and the mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm), while the satellite retrievals need to be improved for the normalized gamma DSD intercept parameter (Nw). The purpose of this study is to assess the antecedent role of brand experience (BE) in the intention to forward online company-generated content (CGC) within an online Islamic banking sector. The present study analyzed 387 valid responses collected through an online survey conducted among a number of online Islamic bank customers in Palestine. The results of this study revealed that BE has a stronger influence on customers’ intention to forward online company-generated contents. This research pioneers the empirical research in Palestinian Islamic banking systems exploring the instrumental role of BE on customers’ engagement behaviors, as well as the intention to forward online CGC. In addition, this research aims to fill the existing gap in the under-researched area of the online branding of Islamic banking services. Full article
