The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 h in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the ’Global VLBI Alliance’ to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth. Full article

The microstructural variation and high-temperature flow features of a Ti-55511 alloy in the β region are studied by utilizing double-stage compression with a stepped strain rate. The results demonstrate that the stresses in the latter stage of hot compression markedly reduce as the strain at the previous stage or the strain rate at the previous/latter stage drops. Moreover, the annihilation/interaction of substructures is promoted, and the distinct refinement of the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in the β grain can be found. However, the coarsening of the β grain and the consumption of dislocation substructures are accelerated at high temperatures. Furthermore, the principal DRX nucleation mechanism of the Ti-55511 alloy during double-stage compression with a stepped strain rate in the β region is discontinuous DRX. Additionally, by using the microstructural variation characteristics related to the forming parameters, a physical mechanism equation is modeled to forecast the forming features, the DRX fraction, and the size of the β grain in the investigated alloy. The forecasted results are in accordance with the tested results, indicating that the established model can accurately forecast the microstructure variation and flow features of the studied alloy. Gene expression divergence is an important evolutionary driving force for the retention of duplicate genes. In this study, we identified three CYP78A subfamily genes in soybean, GmCYP78A70, GmCYP78A57 and GmCYP78A72, which experienced different duplication events. GmCYP78A70 was mainly expressed in leaf tissue and the vegetative phase, whereas GmCYP78A57 was mainly expressed in floral tissue and seed, i.e., the reproductive phase. Expression of GmCYP78A72 could be detected in all the tissues and phases mentioned above. The expression levels of GmCYP78A70 and GmCYP78A57 in different soybean cultivars showed positive correlations with leaf size and 100-seed weight, respectively. The population genetics analysis indicated that the three genes had experienced different selective pressures during domestication and improved breeding of soybean. Deciphering the function of this subfamily of genes may well prove useful to breeders for improving soybean’s agronomic traits. Full article

This paper presents the results of an experiment to investigate the high cycle fatigue properties of the ultra-high strength steel TM210A. A constant amplitude rotating bending fatigue experiment was performed at room temperature at stress ratio R = −1. In order to evaluate the notch effect, the fatigue experiment was carried out upon two sets of specimens, smooth and notched, respectively. In the experiment, the rotating bending fatigue life was tested using the group method, and the rotating bending fatigue limit was tested using the staircase method at 1 × 107 cycles. A double weighted least square method was then used to fit the stress-life (S–N) curve. The S–N curves of the two sets of specimens were obtained and the morphologies of the fractures of the two sets of specimens were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the fatigue limit of the smooth specimen for rotating bending fatigue was 615 MPa; the ratio of the fatigue limit to tensile strength was 0.29, and the cracks initiated at the surface of the smooth specimen; while the fatigue limit of the notched specimen for rotating bending fatigue was 363 MPa, and the cracks initiated at the edge of the notch. The fatigue notch sensitivity index of the ultra-high strength maraging steel TM210A was 0.69. Full article
